The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is unable to resume services to homeless Yellowknife residents at the Aspen Apartments on 51 Street at this time. The Aspen Apartments location had been used to provide meals as well as washroom and shower facilities to supplement the NWT Disabilities Council Day Shelter/Sobering Centre on 50th Street. The NWTDC shelter is operating at reduced capacity because of pandemic public health orders limiting indoor gathering sizes.
The City of Yellowknife’s Development Appeal Board has received, and granted an appeal to the City permit required to occupy the space at Aspen for the intended purposes. This means that the permit will not be issued until the matter is further adjudicated. The GNWT wants to reassure residents that the following services are still being provided at the locations listed below.
- Food distribution, including to-go meal service, is currently available at the NWT Disabilities Council Day Shelter/Sobering Centre on 50th Street
- Restroom and shower access are available at the NWT Disabilities Council Day Shelter/Sobering Centre on 50th Street and at the Salvation Army
The GNWT is looking forward to the relaxation of current public health restrictions related to indoor gatherings soon , which will increase capacity at the NWT Disabilities Council Day Shelter/Sobering Centre and reduce the need for additional space to provide such services. The GNWT is working proactively to identify a location for the delivery of additional day sheltering services should they again be needed in the autumn. In addition, the GNWT is working towards the creation of a permanent, purpose-built Wellness and Recovery Centre to meet the needs of members of the community who are impacted by homelessness.
