Stay Safe on the Roads This Winter: Essential Winter Driving Tips

Public Service Announcement

Yellowknife — November 5, 2024

As winter approaches, the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) reminds all drivers to take extra precautions to ensure their safety on the roads. Winter driving requires special attention to vehicle preparation, awareness of road conditions, and readiness for emergencies.

Prepare Your Vehicle

Before winter fully sets in, make sure your vehicle is winter-ready:

  • Install Winter / Snow Tires: Ensure better traction on snow and ice.
  • Complete Maintenance: Check your battery, brakes, and antifreeze levels.
  • Pack a Winter Survival Kit: Essential items include blankets, a flashlight, first aid kit, snacks, a shovel, and a tow strap.

Drive According to Conditions

  • Check Weather and Road Conditions: Visit the NWT Highway Conditions Map, DriveNWT.ca for up-to-date information before traveling.
  • Adjust Your Speed: Drive slower in snow, ice, or when visibility is poor.
  • Stay Visible: Clear your windows and always keep your headlights on.

What to Do in an Emergency

If you get stuck:

  • Stay with Your Vehicle: It provides shelter and is easier for rescuers to find.
  • Run Your Engine Sparingly: Avoid carbon monoxide poisoning by ensuring the exhaust pipe is clear of snow.
  • Stay Warm: Move to maintain circulation and stay alert if stranded overnight.

Winter/Ice Road Safety

Winter and ice roads are lifelines for many NWT communities, but they come with extra risks:

  • Yield to Oncoming Traffic: Narrow sections and large commercial vehicles require patience.
  • Expect Delays: Plan for unexpected delays due to road conditions or weather changes.
  • Obey Signage: Never drive on a closed road – it’s closed for your safety.

Plan Ahead

  • Share Your Travel Plans: Let someone know your route and expected arrival time.
  • Be Prepared: Carry extra fuel, a spare tire, and food. Some highways have limited resources.

The safety of all travellers is a top priority. By preparing your vehicle, adjusting your driving to conditions, and being ready for emergencies, you can help ensure a safe journey this winter.
