Public engagement for the draft Range Plan for Boreal Caribou in the Northwest Territories: Wek’èezhìı Region (Range Plan) is complete, and the What We Heard report is now available. This is an important step in supporting the long-term conservation and recovery of boreal caribou in the Northwest Territories (NWT).
Boreal caribou are a culturally, spiritually, and ecologically important species in the NWT. The Wek’èezhìı region continues to support healthy boreal caribou habitat, and the draft Range Plan aims to help maintain that habitat while balancing responsible land use and sustainable development, economic opportunities, and community interests.
Public engagement took place from March 25 to April 17, 2026, through the GNWT’s Have Your Say platform. Participants provided feedback on a range of topics, including habitat protection, disturbance thresholds, the use of traditional knowledge and science, monitoring, land-use activities, and long-term conservation measures. Feedback received during public engagement will be considered as the plan is finalized.
This Range Plan will require final approval from GNWT and the Wek’èezhìı Renewable Resources Board before being published and implemented.
