Starting October 13, 2024, fees for various tenant services at the Yellowknife Airport (YZF) will increase.
This includes services such as maintenance, first aid and extinguisher training and airside driver operator permit testing. The changes will also apply to fines for lost keys and passes, as well as float plane escort and docking services. In most cases, tenants have the option to either use YZF services or contract them out.
Key principles behind the fee updates are as follows:
- Labour costs: Hourly rates for services are aligned with the current Collective Agreement for positions such as Airfield Maintenance Specialists, Electricians, Supervisors, Firefighters, and Airport/Duty Managers.
- Equipment costs: Fees for equipment use are based on the Alberta Roadbuilders & Heavy Construction Association (ARHCA) rental rates.
- Northern considerations: Fees are competitive but adjusted to account for the unique costs of operating in the North.
- Cost recovery: Users who benefit directly from YZF services are expected to bear a portion of the costs associated with providing those services.
Moving forward, YZF plans to review and update fees annually in line with new ARHCA rental rates.
YZF operates on a cost-recovery basis, meaning fees are set to cover the cost of providing services, not to generate profit. The airport's fee structure is updated periodically to reflect the true cost of operations, ensuring the airport remains financially self-sustaining. To support the capital, operating and maintenance needs of YZF, the Yellowknife Airport Revolving Fund was established on July 1, 2017. It was established under the Revolving Funds Act and is administered by the Department of Infrastructure.
