Department Information

The Department of Infrastructure (INF) provides high quality services to the public and Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) departments, boards and agencies including the planning, design, construction, acquisition, operation and maintenance of public transportation infrastructure and the buildings, works and equipment required for the GNWT to deliver its programs and services. INF makes essential petroleum products available for sale to the public where these products are not provided by the private sector, and promotes the development and increased use of energy efficient technologies.  INF also regulates electrical and mechanical safety services and licenses individuals and vehicles operating in the territory.

Job Information

The Small Vessel Machinery Operator (SVMO) is responsible for the maintenance of and repairs to main propulsion machinery, generators and related machinery and equipment on any self-propelled inland vehicle and passenger ferry in the Government of Northwest Territories (GNWT) fleet. The SVMO reports to the Marine Captain and is responsible for maintaining and repairing the ferry's engine(s) and onboard equipment in accordance with GNWT's Standing Orders and Transport Canada regulations. The incumbent performs routine checks and planned service and maintenance of the ferry in order to keep the ferry in safe working condition and fully operational during the scheduled day. Minor repairs may also need to be undertaken.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
¿    Must have technical knowledge of marine vessels 
¿    Ability to locate and diagnose mechanical problems 
¿    Ability to interpret vessel specifications 
¿    Knowledge of standard repair methods, tools, equipment and techniques 
¿    Knowledge of all of the vessel equipment

Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:
¿    SVMO - Small Vessel Machinery Operator Certificate or equivalent that meets Transport Canada requirements for the installed power; 
¿    Valid Medical Examination Certificate; 
¿    Valid Marine First Aid Certificate; ¿ Three years related experience (five years¿ experience is preferred).

The salary range for this position is from $45.34 per hour to $54.15 per hour (approximately $88, 413 - $105, 593) plus a pro-rated annual Northern Allowance of $6.13 per hour.
