Minister Lafferty Tables Aboriginal Student Achievement Status Report

May 17, 2011 - The Aboriginal Student Achievement (ASA) Status Report was tabled yesterday by Minister of Education, Culture and Employment, Jackson Lafferty.

“Our long-term goal of developing and implementing a territorial education plan to bridge the achievement gap between Aboriginal and other students is receiving constant support from Aboriginal governments as well as community and education leaders,” says Lafferty.

South Slave Minister’s Regional Forum on Aboriginal Student Achievement Focuses on Revitalizing Language and Culture

April 28, 2011 - Language and culture revitalization was the focus of the South Slave Aboriginal Student Achievement (ASA) Minister’s Regional Forum on Hay River’s K’atlo’deeche First Nation Reserve, April 5 to 7, 2011.

This was the fifth in a series of forums hosted by the Minister of Education, Culture and Employment, Jackson Lafferty, to hear from community and youth representatives, educators and Aboriginal governments. Feedback from the forums will help direct development of territorial, as well as community specific, education plans.

New NWT Arts Council Members Announced

April 12, 2011 - Margaret Nazon of Inuvik, Vivian Edgi-Manuel of Fort Good Hope, Barb Tsetso of Fort Simpson, and Leela Gilday of Yellowknife – have been appointed to the NWT Arts Council by Minister of Education, Culture and Employment Jackson Lafferty.

“The impressive credentials and artistic talent of these individuals will help the NWT Arts Council to meet its mandate of promoting and supporting the abundance of artistic talent that exists in the Northwest Territories,” says Minister Lafferty.

Aboriginal Student Achievement Forum in South Slave Region

April 4, 2011 - The South Slave Minister’s Regional Forum on Aboriginal Student Achievement (ASA) begins April 5 in Hay River. Aboriginal government, community and youth representatives, alongside educators and school principals from each community within the South Slave, will talk with the Minister of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE), Jackson Lafferty, about Aboriginal student achievement.

Aboriginal Languages Month

March 2, 2011 - During Aboriginal Languages Month, residents across the Northwest Territories are encouraged to celebrate our Aboriginal languages and culture by spending time with elders and participating in community events.

“Languages are about identity – who we are and how we understand and interact with each other,” says Minister of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE), Jackson Lafferty. “Promoting Aboriginal languages encourages the promotion of healthy lifestyles, and family and cultural values.”
