September 26, 2011 - The Department of Education, Culture and Employment and the NWT Mining Heritage Society have launched a new initiative designed to give students in the North a new appreciation for their land and spark an interest in pursuing careers in geology, the earth sciences and mining.
September 23, 2011 - The Department of Education, Culture and Employment and the NWT Mining Heritage Society invite all media to attend the official release of the geological resource, Geological Journey I. The DVDs and teacher support material will be made available to all schools in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut to benefit students from Kindergarten to grade 12.

Sept. 2, 2011 - Minister of Education, Culture and Employment, Jackson Lafferty, today expressed his condolences to the family and friends of Beaufort Delta elder Elizabeth (Liz) Hansen, who passed away recently after a brief illness. Ms. Hansen was a respected educator who dedicated her life to the promotion and preservation of the Gwich’in language.
August 24, 2011 - The Minister of Education, Culture and Employment informs the House of its ongoing research into the Student Financial Assistance program and how well it is benefitting students seeking to further their post-secondary education. This ties into the Memorandum of Understanding signed between all three Territories exploring various models for Northern universities.
August 22, 2011 - Five Northwest Territories (NWT) residents and organizations were honoured this morning at the inaugural Minister’s Cultural Circle Award Ceremony. The event took place in the South Gallery of the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre, as a way of recognizing the important and lasting contributions of those dedicated to the arts and cultures of the North.
Purpose: To provide lasting recognition and gratitude towards those who contribute to the preservation and promotion of cultures and heritage in the Northwest Territories. The Cultural Circle helps build awareness amongst all northerners about the importance of promoting, protecting, preserving and celebrating our unique culture, heritage and ways of life.
Eligible Recipients:
Youth Category - Youth, 25 years of age and under, who demonstrate a strong commitment to engaging in the arts, cultural learning and cultural practices.
