Alberta and Northwest Territories Release First Joint Report on Bilateral Water Agreement

YELLOWKNIFE (November 21, 2017) – The Government of Alberta and the Government of the Northwest Territories are pleased to report on the outcomes of the first year of implementation of the Alberta-Northwest Territories Transboundary Water Management Agreement to maintain the ecological integrity of our shared waters.

Working Together to Manage Our Shared Waters, released today, is the inaugural annual report of the bilateral committee responsible for implementing the Agreement.

Arsenic Warning Signs Installed at Lakes with High Arsenic around Yellowknife

YELLOWKNIFE (November 6, 2017) — The Government of the Northwest Territories and the City of Yellowknife have installed arsenic warning signs to these highly accessible lakes in the Yellowknife area:                            

  • Frame Lake
  • Jackfish Lake
  • Kam Lake
  • Rat Lake

These signs complement other steps taken earlier this year to raise awareness about this important issue amongst residents and visitors.

Robert C. McLeod: Climate Change Framework Next Steps

Mr. Speaker, the NWT is on the front lines of climate change and has been experiencing its impacts for decades. Our government is committed to addressing the threats that climate change poses to the sustainability of our communities and the way of life of our residents.

The Government of the Northwest Territories is actively engaged in a comprehensive and coordinated response to climate change by developing a Climate Change Strategic Framework, which will guide our efforts on climate change from 2018 to 2030.

Robert C. McLeod: Orange Shirt Day

Mr. Speaker, since 2013, September 30th has been marked as Orange Shirt Day, a day for all Canadians to remember the survivors of the residential school system.

Organizers chose an orange shirt as the symbol for that day based on a story told by Phyllis Jack Webstat, a survivor of the St. Joseph Mission Residential School in Williams Lake, BC. In her story, Ms. Webstat tells of having the shiny, new orange shirt her grandmother had given to her being taken away on her first day at residential school.

Robert C. McLeod: Update On NWT Climate Change Strategic Framework

Mr. Speaker, climate change is an issue of serious concern for this government and the people of the Northwest Territories. Our government has made a commitment in its mandate to develop a territorial climate change strategic framework.

I am pleased to provide Members with an update on the development of this framework, intended to guide our efforts on climate change from 2018 to 2030.

YELLOWKNIFE (September 20, 2017)  – The Land and Water Boards of the Mackenzie Valley and the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) are pleased to announce the release of the Guidelines for Effluent Mixing Zones.

Fire Bans Lifted for City of Yellowknife, Fred Henne and Yellowknife River Territorial Parks

YELLOWKNIFE (JULY 28, 2017) — Fire bans have been lifted for the City of Yellowknife, and Fred Henne and Yellowknife River Territorial Parks effective immediately.

The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment and the City of Yellowknife remind park users and residents to remain cautious, ensure all fires are extinguished before leaving sites and to use approved fire pits only.

GNWT to host Bioblitz in five NWT Communities

(Yellowknife, NT – July 26, 2017) - The Government of the Northwest Territories is hosting a unique wildlife survey as part of a nation-wide project to help connect Canadians with nature and showcase the wealth of our biodiversity. This special BioBlitz Canada 150 project is supported by the Canadian Wildlife Federation (CWF), and partners in conservation, in celebration of the 150th anniversary of Confederation.
