Mr. Speaker, I am committed to building more homes for Northerners.

We are turning this commitment into action through a multi-year plan with funding from the GNWT, the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation, and Housing NWT. Each year for the rest of this Legislative Assembly, Housing NWT will invest $50 million annually, including $41.6 million per year from the GNWT, to build new homes and repair existing ones.

Housing NWT Awards 84-Unit Contract to Northern Manufacturer

A contract for 84 new housing units has been awarded to Arcan Construction Ltd., working with METCAN Building Solutions, an NWT manufacturer that builds homes in Hay River, Northwest Territories.

This milestone reflects Housing NWT’s commitment to address urgent housing needs across the territory, while also supporting the NWT economy. This contract represents a portion of the 98 planned units across nine communities.

Minister Lucy Kuptana visits Sahtu riding with MLA McNeely, tour projects focused on new homes in the North and understand community needs

Honourable Lucy Kuptana, Minister Responsible for Housing NWT and Status of Women, joined Member for Sahtu Danny McNeely on a four-day constituency tour of the Sahtu region. Held from September 10-13, 2025, the tour included visits to Norman Wells, Fort Good Hope and Tulita to hear community housing needs directly from residents.

Housing NWT Releases Interim Update on Renewal Strategy

Housing NWT has released its second update on the progress of the Housing NWT Renewal Strategy. This marks an important step in its commitment to increasing access to affordable housing for Northwest Territories (NWT) residents and making more homes for Northerners.

Since the launch of its renewed mandate in 2022, Housing NWT has completed 31 of the 42 actions. Eight actions are still in progress, and three are ongoing. Housing NWT is pleased to report that all actions are expected to be completed during the 20th Legislative Assembly.

GNWT advancing 98 new modular homes across nine NWT communities

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is moving forward with a major modular housing project that will deliver 98 new homes across nine communities in the Northwest Territories. This initiative is part of a historic three-year, $150 million plan approved this year by the Legislative Assembly to improve housing across the territory.

The GNWT appoints Administrator to Fort Resolution Housing Authority

The Fort Resolution Housing Authority has been placed under Administration. This will remain in effect until it is repealed at a date to be determined.

The Minister of Housing Northwest Territories (Housing NWT) has determined that it has become necessary to place the Fort Resolution Housing Authority under administration to due to operational challenges. It is an exceptional measure that has been deemed necessary to stabilize operations and address the challenges the Housing Authority is facing.

Territorial Housing Needs Assessment survey is now open

The Territorial Housing Needs Assessment (THNA) survey opens today, giving residents across the Northwest Territories a chance to share their experiences and priorities when it comes to housing.

This is the first time in over 20 years that a housing study of this scale has been done across the entire NWT. The THNA will give a clear, up-to-date picture of housing challenges at the community, regional, and territorial levels, and help shape better housing programs and funding decisions.

Mr. Speaker, ensuring the health and well-being of all residents in the Northwest Territories is an essential work of this government.

The NWT is falling behind other jurisdictions when it comes to implementing healthy safeguards to limit smoking. Yukon implemented a smoking ban in public and government housing in in 2012, and Nunavut followed suit in 2023. Now, we must align with prevailing health advice and ensure safe, client-focused housing solutions.
