The next phase of work is now underway on the site of the new 50-unit social housing multi-plex in downtown Yellowknife. Site mobilization started on March 3rd, with on-the-ground construction activities scheduled to begin later this month. Yellowknife residents can expect intermittent street closures while material is being delivered. The project remains on track for completion in Spring 2027.
Housing NWT has completed two new three-bedroom modular duplexes in Fort McPherson, adding four new social housing units to help meet housing needs in the community.
The new homes were prefabricated and transported to Fort McPherson for on-site assembly, allowing construction to move quickly and efficiently while ensuring the units are built to withstand northern conditions. The duplexes will increase the availability of family-sized social housing in the community and replace aging housing stock that has reached or is nearing the end of its service life.
Effective April 1, 2026, Northwest Territories Integration and Community Services (NWT ICS) will assume operational responsibility for the Inuvik Warming Shelter.
Housing NWT has awarded a contract to Northern Industrial Construction Ltd. for the new Singles Multi-Unit Residential Building that will be built in Hay River. This new project will replace an aging 28-unit singles social housing complex. The new 30-unit building for singles will incorporate contemporary standards for energy efficiency, climate resilience, community safety, and accessibility, with ten designated barrier-free units.

I want to assure Members and all Northerners, that real, measurable progress is happening. Today I will highlight the work Housing NWT and Local Housing Organizations have done over the past year in repairing and improving social housing units across the NWT.

This report examines housing needs across the Northwest Territories, both now and into the future. It provides the foundation for collaborative action, evidence-based planning, and strong advocacy for increased housing investment across the NWT.

Mr. Speaker, last fall, the Auditor General released its report on housing in the Northwest Territories. This was a call to action, and we are answering it. Staff and leadership remain committed to transparency and view the audit findings as an opportunity to improve the suitability, accessibility, and affordability of housing across the territory.
