(March 5, 2013) - Mr. Speaker, the universal skills required to lead people, champion innovation and manage change are becoming even more important, given the GNWT’s complex and ever-changing work context. These skills combine with our staff’s technical skills and knowledge to make them strong, capable leaders. I am pleased to announce that our new Senior Management Competency Model will guide the development of management expertise within the public service as we work to achieve the 17^th Assembly’s vision and goals.

(February 27, 2013) - Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to confirm that the Government of the Northwest Territories’ new Reservist leave policy allows public service employees to take unpaid time off to serve with the Canada Reserve Force, part of the Canadian Forces.

(February 21, 2013) – Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to confirm that the Government of the Northwest Territories has signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Union of Northern Workers on procedures for employees to safely disclose allegations of wrongdoing.

(February 19, 2013) - Mr. Speaker, I am very pleased to announce that the Government of the Northwest Territories has been chosen as one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers for 2013. This recognition, by the Globe and Mail and Mediacorp Canada Incorporated follows our recent recognition as one of Canada’s Top 100 Employers for 2013.

YELLOWKNIFE (February 19, 2013) – The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has been named as one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers. The prestigious annual award recognizes organizations that work to include women, Aboriginal peoples, persons with disabilities, visible minorities, and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) peoples in the workplace. The award complements the GNWT’s recognition as one of Canada’s Top 100 Employers for 2013.

Mr. Speaker, effective human resource management of the NWT public service relies on partnerships between the Department of Human Resources and other Government departments, boards, and agencies.

Mr. Speaker, the Government is committed to being an inclusive workplace open to all Northerners.  A diverse workplace improves our ability to serve the public.

Mr. Speaker, I am happy to report that the Government of the Northwest Territories hired 308 students this past summer.  This was an increase of nine percent from 2011, when 286 students were hired.  Of the 308 students hired, 54.6 per cent were Indigenous Aboriginals.

The Summer Student Employment is an investment in our future and our youth.  Through this Program, Northern students gain valuable work experience to complement their formal education and test drive the GNWT as a future employer. 

Mr. Speaker, on October 10th the Government of the Northwest Territories was recognized as one of Canada’s Top 100 Employers for 2013. This places the GNWT among an exclusive group of Canadian employers who lead their industries in their commitment to employees and their ability to recruit and retain a committed and engaged workforce.
