Workshop enhances Northwest Territories tourism capacity

YELLOWKNIFE (March 11, 2016) — A packed house of delegates left an energetic presentation with new knowledge on how to supercharge community tourism offerings in the Northwest Territories (NWT) this week.

From March 8 to 10, the Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) funded and facilitated the Engaging Community Tourism Champions workshop at the Explorer Hotel.

Northwest Territories to develop homegrown mining regulations

YELLOWKNIFE (March 10, 2016)—The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) today announced major modernization initiatives for the mining and exploration sector.

The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) will begin the process of developing and proposing a new, leading edge Mineral Resources Act to address the NWT’s unique regulatory needs while becoming more responsive to evolving industrial environments.

Thank you for that generous introduction. Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, I appreciate your attention this afternoon as we talk about economic leadership in the Arctic Region — a region of increasing interest and importance for the energy sector.

I would like to offer my gratitude to The Energy Council for hosting the conference this week. The programming thus far has been extraordinarily engaging and informative. I look forward to further events as the weekend continues to unfold.

Annual film screening tour returns to NWT communities

YELLOWKNIFE (March 3, 2016) — A Yellowknife-based organization will spread the love of film to communities across the Northwest Territories (NWT) this March.

The Yellowknife International Film Festival (YKIFF) Road Tour — an annual event coordinated by Western Arctic Moving Pictures (WAMP) — will screen NWT and Yukon-produced films alongside select international features in each region of the NWT.

Premier McLeod announces senior management changes

(YELLOWKNIFE – February 23, 2016) Premier Bob McLeod named Ms. Kelly Kaylo as acting Deputy Minister of the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) today. Ms. Kaylo replaces Mr. Peter Vician, who is retiring from the Government of the Northwest Territories after 34  years of service. The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has undertaken an executive search process to identify a permanent replacement for Mr. Vician.

Bob McLeod: Spectacular Stories - Growth for the NWT Tourism Sector

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to update the Legislature on continuing activities in support of our territory’s most promising growth industry.

Tourism is the Northwest Territories’ single-largest renewable resource-based sector.  It has enjoyed continued growth through 2015. Thanks to investments and initiatives undertaken by the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment – and our many partners and affiliate industry organizations, we are also well-positioned today to capitalize on even more opportunities in 2016.
