October 31, 2011 - The Lafferty ferry at the Fort Liard crossing near Fort Simpson has resumed service and is forecast to end operations for the season on November 4.

August 9, 2011 - The Honourable Ted Menzies, Minister of State (Finance), on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, was joined today by the Honourable Bob McLeod, Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment for the Government of the Northwest Territories on behalf of the Honourable Michael McLeod, Minister of Transportation, to announce that the Government of Canada is investing $369,500 in improvements to the Yellowknife Airport.

August 8, 2011 — A ribbon cutting ceremony marked the official opening of Yellowknife Airport’s new Combined Services Building. The new multi-use facility houses the airport fire hall, equipment maintenance bays, as well as administrative space for trades and fire hall staff.
August 5, 2011 - Hours of operation of the Arctic Red River ferry at km. 143 Dempster Highway will be extended from Tuesday August 9 to Thursday August 11 to accommodate highway travellers attending the Gwich’in Annual General Meeting in Tsiigehtchic. The ferry will operate from 7:15 a.m. to 12:45 a.m., with the last ferry leaving the Tsiigehtchic access side at 12:40 a.m. Hours of operation of the Peel River ferry at km. 74 Dempster Highway will run from 9:15 a.m. to 12:45 a.m. Normal hours of operation will resume on Friday, August 12.
June 30, 2011 - Students in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories training for careers in northern aviation can now apply for one of thirteen (13) $5,000 scholarships through the Aviation Career Development Program (ACDP).
The Government of Nunavut will provide four scholarships for residents of Nunavut. Peter Taptuna, Minister of Economic Development & Transportation, says the commitment will help ensure Nunavummiut receive the training and education they need to play a role in the territory’s air transportation system.
June 20, 2011 - The Project Description Report (PDR), for the future construction of the Mackenzie Valley Highway in the Gwich’in Settlement Area, was presented to Transportation Minister Michael McLeod by Richard Nerysoo, President of the Gwich’in Tribal Council, marking another milestone in the Mackenzie Valley Highway to Tuktoyaktuk project.
June 15, 2011 - For the third consecutive year, hundreds of bicycle helmets, supplied by BHP Billiton, are being distributed by the GNWT throughout the Northwest Territories to encourage children and youth to wear their helmets while cycling.
The donations support the GNWT’s Use Your Head campaign under the Healthy Choices Framework. The campaign promotes the use of helmets by youth and adults as another Healthy Choice that will prevent brain and spinal injuries for bicycle, motorcycle, ATV, and snowmobile riders and skateboarders in the NWT.
