GNWT releases draft framework for managing cabin leases and recreational uses of public lands

YELLOWKNIFE (October 4, 2016) – The Government of the Northwest Territories has released its draft Recreational Land Management Framework for the Northwest Territories. The framework will guide how the GNWT develops policy and makes decisions about public land management for years to come.

The draft framework outlines the GNWT’s approach for reviewing and updating its management of cabin leases and recreational uses of public land across the NWT.

Update on Robertson Headframe Discussions

YELLOWKNIFE (July 29, 2016) – The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has determined after a lengthy review of options that it will not be preserving the Robertson Headframe.

The GNWT entered into discussions with Miramar Mining Limited earlier this year about whether there was an opportunity to save the headframe from demolition, given its historical significances to the history of mining in the Northwest Territories and as an iconic feature of the Yellowknife area landscape.  

Robert C. McLeod: Yellowknife Periphery Area Engagement and Recreational Land Management Framework

Mr. Speaker, the GNWT has made a commitment in its Mandate to finalize the Recreational Land Management Framework and a plan for the Yellowknife periphery area. Engaging with NWT residents while doing this work is critical to making sure public land will be managed in a manner that is transparent, consistent and reflects public values. This has set the tone for the approach that the Department of Lands has taken in developing both a NWT-wide Recreational Land Management Framework, and a recreation management plan for areas around Yellowknife.

Minister of Lands approves Environmental Assessment of Jay Pipe expansion

YELLOWKNIFE (May 20, 2016) – Minister of Lands Robert C. McLeod announced today that, he with the concurrence of the other four responsible Territorial and Federal ministers, has accepted the Mackenzie Valley Environmental Impact Review Board's Report of Environmental Assessment for the Jay Pipe expansion. Dominion Diamond Ekati Corporation can now proceed to the regulatory permitting phase with the Project.

Yellowknife area recreation management planning beginning this summer

YELLOWKNIFE (May 18, 2016) The Government of the Northwest Territories is asking for your participation in developing a recreation management plan for the Yellowknife periphery area.

This work builds on previous public engagements and surveys completed as part of the Recreational Land Management Framework development to date and will narrow in on Yellowknife area recreational opportunities and activities.

NWT Premier promotes responsible development at BC mining event

YELLOWKNIFE (January 25, 2016) – Premier of the Northwest Territories and Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) Bob McLeod will attend the 2016 Mineral Exploration Roundup in Vancouver, BC this week. The Premier will promote the importance of the resource development industry to the Northwest Territories economy, highlighting the need for continued infrastructure investment and completion of a made-in-the-North regulatory regime that facilitates responsible development in line with NWT priorities and values.

Cassidy Point leaseholders provided option to obtain fee simple title

YELLOWKNIFE, NT (July 23, 2015 ) – The Government of the Northwest Territories is moving forward to provide Cassidy Point leaseholders with the opportunity to obtain fee simple title on their existing lot.

“By providing the opportunity to pursue land ownership, this government is fulfilling a long-standing commitment to the Cassidy Point leaseholders,” said Robert C. McLeod, Minister of Lands. “The Department will be working directly with the leaseholders to provide information and details about the purchase process, should they choose that option.”
