Assembly of First Nations National Chief Shawn Atleo Supports Aboriginal Student Achievement Education Partnership Declaration

YELLOWKNIFE, NT (April 18, 2012) – The Honourable Jackson Lafferty, Minister of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE), received support from the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo for the Aboriginal Student Achievement (ASA) Education Plan.

NWT’s Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) rates decrease

YELLOWKNIFE (April 18, 2012) Finally, the NWT is seeing a reduction in STIs. The NWT has seen a drop in the number of cases for Gonorrhea. Gonorrhea (also known as “The Clap”) is a common STI that can be cured with antibiotics.  However, if not treated early, it can seriously affect your health and may cause sterility.

The Report on Sexually Transmitted Infections in Canada: 2009 found Gonorrhea rates in the NWT drop by 20.1% from 2008 to 2009.

YELLOWKNIFE (April 17, 2012) -- On Wednesday, April 4th, 2012, the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) and the Fédération franco-ténoise (FFT) Consultation/Cooperation Committee successfully concluded the initial draft of the Strategic Plan on French Language Communications and Services (the Strategic Plan).

GNWT and UNW Reach Tentative Agreement

YELLOWKNIFE (April 16, 2012) – The Union of Northern Workers (UNW) and the Government of the Northwest Territories have reached a tentative agreement for a new four-year collective agreement.

If ratified, the new collective agreement will be effective April 1, 2012 and will apply to the almost 4,000 UNW members employed by the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) across the Northwest Territories, as well as employees with the Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission in the NWT and Nunavut.
