Apply for an Indigenous Language Revitalization Scholarship

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is now accepting applications for the Indigenous Language Revitalization Scholarship.

Ten scholarships valued at $5,000 each will be awarded to eligible NWT students enrolled in certificate, diploma, degree programs, or other training that supports Indigenous language revitalization during the 2023-2024 academic year.

Priority will be given to NWT students enrolled in programs offered by accredited post-secondary institutions.

The application deadline is December 1, 2023, at 5 p.m.

Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs renews Territorial State of Emergency for the South Slave Region due to NWT wildfire situation

Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA) Minister Shane Thompson has once again renewed the Territorial State of Emergency that was originally declared on August 15, 2023 and renewed for a first time on August 29, 2023 due to the wildfire situation across multiple Northwest Territories (NWT) regions. The extended Territorial State of Emergency will be for the South Slave Region and will be in effect from September 19 until October 02, 2023.

Fire Bans Extended for North and South Slave Regions on all Public and Private Lands

The current fire bans have been extended for all public and private lands in both the North Slave and the South Slave Regions.

These bans are effective through September 22 and may be extended if necessary. They apply to following communities and on the land:

 North Slave:

  • Behchokǫ
  • Dettah
  • Gamètı̀
  • łutselk’e
  • N’dilǫ
  • Wekweètı̀
  • Whatı̀
  • Yellowknife

South Slave:

September is FASD Awareness Month - Uniting our Strengths: Finding Solutions Together

Yellowknife (September 12, 2023) - September is Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) awareness month, a time dedicated to conversation about FASD, improving prevention, and supporting those living with FASD. The theme for this year’s FASD awareness month is Uniting our Strengths: Finding Solutions Together.

Flight pre-registration now available for Hay River, Kátł’odeeche First Nation, and Fort Smith evacuee re-entry

Yellowknife (September 11, 2023) – To help evacuees of Hay River, Kátł’odeeche First Nation, and Fort Smith prepare to return home from Alberta once evacuation orders are downgraded, pre-registration for re-entry flights will open at 8:00 a.m. on September 12, 2023.

Pre-registration is the first step in developing passenger lists for re-entry flights. From there, appropriate aircraft will be booked based on need. Re-entry flights can then be scheduled to depart from Alberta once a date is set for evacuation orders to be downgraded.

Marine Transportation Services Final Sailings

Yellowknife (September 8, 2023) – Marine Transportation Services (MTS) cancels final sailings to Norman Wells and Tulita due to low water levels.

Today, the GNWT's Marine Transportation Services announced that the third sailings to the communities of Norman Wells and Tulita have been cancelled due to dangerously low water levels on the Mackenzie River.

Safety of crew, vessels and the environment is paramount.  The low water levels make it dangerous to continue to operate on the Mackenzie River. 

Applicants now receiving full Evacuee Income Disruption Support Payments

Yellowknife (September 7, 2023) – The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has adjusted the Evacuee Income Disruption Support (EIDS) program. Starting immediately, eligible residents will now receive the full $750 as a one-time payment, without any withholding tax.

 

Initial EIDS payments from the GNWT deducted a 10% withholding tax, meaning that residents received $675 instead of the full $750. Residents who previously received a payment of $675 will soon receive an additional payment of $75.
