Videos Launched to support FASD Awareness Month

The Department of Health and Social Services has developed two public awareness videos on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) to bring attention to the importance of diagnosis, and how the public can help support individuals living with FASD.

September is recognized nationally as FASD Awareness Month. FASD is a term used to describe the impacts on the brain and body of an individual who was exposed to alcohol before birth. FASD is a lifelong, brain-based disability. It presents differently in each person, due to the wide variation of alcohol effects on brain development.

NWT Arts Council now accepting funding proposals

Proposals are now being accepted for NWT Art Council funding for artists and organizations that are producing artistic works, projects, or events in the Northwest Territories (NWT) between April 2022 and March 2023.

Application deadline: October 31, 2021 at 5 p.m. (MST)

The maximum funding amount is $15,000 and funding must be spent by March 31, 2023. In response to COVID-19, proposals that include online presentations or showcases will be accepted.

Early Learning and Child Care Scholarship applications now open

Applications are now being accepted for Early Learning and Child Care (ELCC) scholarships to help increase the number of qualified early childhood development professionals in the Northwest Territories (NWT).

Thirty scholarships valued at $5,000 each will be awarded to eligible NWT students enrolled in a diploma or degree programs with a direct focus in Early Childhood Development during the 2021-2022 academic year.

Application deadline: October 15, 2021 at 5 p.m. (MST)

Public Service Announcement: Public Health Emergency Extended Through September 28

Minister of Health and Social Services, Julie Green has extended the territory-wide Public Health Emergency under the Northwest Territories’ Public Health Act on the advice of Chief Public Health Officer (CPHO) Dr. Kami Kandola.

The latest extension continues through September 28, 2021. 

The Public Health Emergency is required to continue to decisively respond to shifts in the NWT’s own public health situation, and maintain preventative measures.

Public Health Emergency Extended Through September 14

Minister of Health and Social Services, Julie Green has extended the territory-wide Public Health Emergency under the Northwest Territories’ Public Health Act on the advice of Chief Public Health Officer (CPHO) Dr. Kami Kandola.

The latest extension continues through September 14, 2021. 

The Public Health Emergency is required to continue to decisively respond to shifts in the NWT’s own public health situation, and maintain preventative measures.

Literacy Awards – Nomination Deadline Extended to September 3, 2021

The Department of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE) and the NWT Literacy Council are extending the nomination deadline for the annual NWT Ministerial Literacy Awards to September 3, 2021.

These awards provide an opportunity to honour the literacy achievements of youth and adult learners, exceptional educators, and organizations and businesses across the territory. Up to eight ministerial literacy awards may be given each year.

Ministerial Literacy Awards include:

·       Youth Learner Literacy Award

·       Adult Learner Literacy Award

Minimum Wage Increase – Effective September 1, 2021

Effective September 1, 2021, the minimum wage will increase from $13.46 per hour to $15.20 per hour.

The minimum wage rate in the NWT was last increased in 2018 and was set at a rate of $13.46 per hour. Since that time, the cost of living and the average hourly wage in the NWT have risen and minimum wage earners have fallen behind. The minimum wage increase strikes a balance between maintaining competitive wage rates and encouraging economic activity.
