Engagement sessions for Great Bear River Bridge happening in the Sahtu region

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is seeking input from communities in the Sahtu region about the Great Bear River Bridge project.

The two-lane bridge will be located at kilometre 938 of the future Mackenzie Valley Highway and will reduce environmental and safety risks associated with crossing the Mackenzie River ice road, extend the winter road season and improve access between communities.

Have Your Say on the Yellowknife Airport 20-Year Master Plan

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is seeking public input on the Yellowknife Airport 20-Year Master Plan. The GNWT is in the process of developing the 20-Year Master Plan that will promote growth and guide current and future airport development.

We invite you to visit GNWT’s Public Engagement website from May 17 to June 12, 2022 to provide feedback. Residents can find information on the 20-Year Master Plan, the two proposed options and complete the online survey.

GNWT adjusts fuel prices in 10 NWT communities

Fuel prices in 10 NWT communities have been increased following the winter resupply program. These price adjustments are a direct result of increased global fuel prices.

Significant increases included in this price adjustment:

  • Heating fuel ranging from 9 to 54 cents per litre.
  • Motive diesel ranging from 9 to 54 cents per litre.
  • Gasoline ranging from 7 to 37 cents per litre.

Similar increases in fuel prices are in effect for government customers in the 10 winter resupply communities.

Residents are invited to join the Platinum Jubilee Celebration as part of the Royal visit

The Government of the Northwest Territories encourages residents to attend public events that will be part of the Royal Tour to honour Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee.

Residents are invited to join the Platinum Jubilee Celebration at the Ceremonial Circle, located behind the Joint Task Force North Building.

SCAM ALERT: Text Messages falsely claiming to be from the Government of the Northwest Territories

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) alerts the public to a text scam concerning a “COVID-19 response benefit from GNWT Economic Relief.”

Cybercriminals are sending fraudulent text messages alerting residents that they can claim a $750 COVID-19 response benefit and directing them to click on a link.

Do not click on any link in the message or share personal information. The GNWT will never ask you to provide, confirm or verify personal, login, or account information through text message. The GNWT won’t ask you via text message to click on a link.

Student Financial Assistance Deadline Approaching

Applications for Student Financial Assistance (SFA) are due by June 30, 2022.

Did you know that you don’t need to be accepted into a program or institution to apply for SFA?  Complete your application before the deadline to ensure it is processed for the start of the Fall semester.

Through SFA, the department of Education, Culture and Employment offers full-time and part-time financial assistance to NWT residents attending accredited, post-secondary institutions and programs to help supplement the cost of obtaining a post-secondary education.

Call for Nominations for the 2022 NWT Outstanding Volunteer Awards

The Department of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA) is announcing the annual notice of the nomination deadline for the Northwest Territories (NWT) Outstanding Volunteer Awards. This year marks the 31st year of this award, which recognizes and celebrates the remarkable contributions volunteers make in communities across the NWT.

Residents are encouraged to nominate an elder, youth, individual, or group of volunteers in their community. This program acknowledges those who give their time to improve the quality of life for their fellow NWT residents. 

Inmate back in custody after escaping Fort Smith Correctional Complex

A male inmate who escaped custody from the Fort Smith Correctional Complex on the evening of April 30, 2022, was located and arrested the morning of May 1, 2022, and is now in custody.

A full critical incident review will be completed to determine the circumstances of the escape and work towards any improvements necessary.

The Department of Justice has the responsibility to uphold the protection and safety of individuals in our care and custody as well as the safety of our staff and the public with the utmost diligence.
