Public Health Emergency Extended Through December 21

Minister of Health and Social Services, Julie Green has extended the territory-wide Public Health Emergency under the Northwest Territories’ Public Health Act on the advice of Chief Public Health Officer (CPHO) Dr. Kami Kandola.

The latest extension continues through December 21, 2021. 

The Public Health Emergency is required to continue to decisively respond to shifts in the NWT’s own public health situation, and maintain preventative measures.

New exhibit at PWNHC demonstrates resiliency through a 21st century pandemic

The travelling exhibit ‘Breathe: Creating resilience through traditional art’ presented by the Departments of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE) and Health and Social Services (HSS) is set to open Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre (PWNHC).

The exhibit will be on display until April 2022 and can be viewed Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm at PWNHC.

More Grubstake Funding for 2021

For the second year in a row, the GNWT is providing a top-up for grubstake payments to offset the impacts of COVID-19. Regular grubstake payments were made in September 2021, and ENR is now offering a second round of payments to support trappers this season.

The Trapper’s Grubstake Program helps trappers offset some of the costs of starting up each season. The amount of funding trappers can receive is tied to the number of pelts they brought in the previous season.

NWT Supported Living Review Public Engagement Sessions

The Government of the Northwest Territories is conducting a review on Supported Living services provided to adults with disabilities.

We would like to hear from individuals with experience of, or need for, supported living services through public engagement sessions in various communities. This information will assist us to respond to how best to meet the needs of NWT residents in the future.

State of Emergency in the City of Yellowknife

The Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs, Shane Thompson, has extended the State of Emergency in the City of Yellowknife. This extension is being made under s.14 of the Emergency Management Act.

The extension continues through December 13, 2021.

This State of Emergency was initially instated to address the need for additional shelter space as a result of ongoing capacity limitations due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Walk-In Hours Expanded at the Yellowknife Driver and Vehicle Issuing Office

Beginning November 30th, the Yellowknife Driver and Vehicle Office is offering expanded walk-in service. Clients can now walk-in on Tuesday and Thursdays, from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Previously, walk-in services were available on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. This shift in service time creates two full days for walk-in clients, rather than pockets of time on specific days.

Highway 7 Checkpoint at BC/NWT Border Opening to Inbound Travellers

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) will re-open Highway 7 at the BC/NWT border near Fort Liard to permitted inbound and outbound traffic two days a week starting Tuesday, November 30

Travellers will be able to use the border crossing on Tuesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. only, and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., and 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. (split hours)

Department of Health and Social Services Releases Results of the Addiction Recovery Experiences Survey

The Department of Health and Social Services (HSS) yesterday released a report titled Addiction Recovery Experiences Survey – Results and Analysis. The report provides feedback from individuals, and their families, who used NWT recovery services on their recovery journey.
