New Partnership in Fort Good Hope Supports Community-Led Housing and Trades Training

News Releases

Fort Good Hope — February 4, 2026

The Government of the Northwest Territories, through Housing NWT, is partnering with Ne’rahten Development Ltd., the business arm of the Yamoga Land Corporation, to support the K’áhsho Got’ı̨nę Trades Centre in Fort Good Hope. This partnership will help improve housing conditions in the Sahtu region by building local trades capacity and supporting community-led housing solutions. It also helps address regional housing needs while strengthening the local economy.

Through this partnership, Housing NWT has contracted Ne’rahten Development Ltd. to manufacture two modular duplexes at the Trades Centre. These duplexes are part of the 98 planned units across nine communities announced in October 2025. This work will support eight work assignments in the community and create opportunities for apprenticeships in the building trades. Once completed, these duplexes will contribute to the community’s housing supply, while supporting Indigenous leadership, local employment, and long-term community capacity.

Quotes

“This partnership shows what is possible when we work together with Indigenous governments and development corporations to support community-led housing solutions. By supporting local trades training, we are advancing reconciliation, creating economic and educational opportunities within community and improving access to housing in a remote region.  I’m proud to see this work move forward for Fort Good Hope and the Sahtu region. The GNWT is committed to building local capacity, supporting Indigenous-led solutions, strengthening northern communities, and expanding housing options to build more homes for Northerners.”

- Lucy Kuptana, Minister Responsible for Housing NWT

“This work started as a community project and has now grown into a powerful initiative in Fort Good Hope.  Economic opportunities in the region are changing due to the loss of oil and gas employers. Supply chain challenges in our remote location and dependency on the winter road have posed further challenges to issues like the housing shortage and securing necessary supplies. The work of the Construction Centre will address not only immediate employment opportunities but also build up apprenticeship training in the community on an on-going basis. We are thankful for the good working relationship between NWT Housing Corporation (Housing NWT) and Minister Kuptana to secure this contract for two duplexes and demonstrate support for this work. We also recognize our partnership with Taylor Architecture Group for their design support. This partnership ensures homes are built to withstand northern conditions and provide good homes that last for generations. This project demonstrates how we can solve several issues at once when we work together. Thanks for all the support.”

    - Joseph Tobac, President of Yamoga Land Corporation and Chief Shawn Grandjambe, Fort Good Hope

"This partnership represents a significant investment in Fort Good Hope and demonstrates our commitment to addressing housing challenges across the Sahtu region. By combining immediate housing solutions with meaningful employment and trades training opportunities, we're building both homes and futures for our communities. I'm proud to see Housing NWT and Ne'rahten Development working together to create lasting economic benefits that will strengthen Sahtu region for years to come."

– Danny McNeely, MLA for Sahtu
