Mr. Speaker, I want to congratulate Kate Powell, Principal of Deninu School in Fort Resolution, on being recognized as one of Canada’s Outstanding Principals for 2018. Principals who receive this award are nominated by their colleagues, school staff, and community members. She is the 14th principal in the Northwest Territories to receive this honour.

Mr. Speaker, we have an ambitious postsecondary agenda that is part of the mandate of this government. Undertaking the Foundational Review of Aurora College, working with the College on a renewed long-term strategic plan, and creating a legislative framework to recognize postsecondary institutions will allow us to expand opportunities for postsecondary education for Northwest Territories residents.
Yellowknife, le 10 janvier 2018 – Alfred Moses, ministre de l’Éducation, de la Culture et de la Formation, a annoncé aujourd’hui une hausse du salaire minimum aux Territoires du Nord-Ouest.
La hausse, qui fera passer le salaire minimum de 12,50 $ l’heure à 13,46 $ l’heure, entrera en vigueur le 1er avril 2018. La décision est fondée sur des recherches et scénarios présentés par le Comité du salaire minimum, créé en 2013 dans le but de conseiller le ministre.

Mr. Speaker, since 2013, September 30th has been marked as Orange Shirt Day, a day for all Canadians to remember the survivors of the residential school system.
Organizers chose an orange shirt as the symbol for that day based on a story told by Phyllis Jack Webstat, a survivor of the St. Joseph Mission Residential School in Williams Lake, BC. In her story, Ms. Webstat tells of having the shiny, new orange shirt her grandmother had given to her being taken away on her first day at residential school.

Mr. Speaker, labour market outcomes in small NWT communities continue to lag.
At the beginning of the 18th Legislative Assembly, the Government of the Northwest Territories made a commitment to develop and implement a strategy to increase employment in small communities.
