YELLOWKNIFE (June 6, 2013) – A new strategic framework for the elimination of poverty outlines the GNWT’s commitment to ensuring all residents of the NWT have the chance to enjoy the benefits of living in a prosperous, well-governed territory and to participate fully in a healthy, just society.  Building on the Strengths of Northerners is an integrated approach that will position NWT residents to achieve long-term economic and social sustainability.

(June 6, 2013) - Mr. Speaker, our government is committed to this Assembly’s goal of helping our residents become and stay healthy, educated people free from poverty. A strong territory needs a strong society. All residents of the NWT should have the chance to enjoy the benefits of living in a prosperous, well-governed territory and to participate fully in a healthy, just society.

YELLOWKNIFE (June 6, 2013) –  A renewed Early Childhood Development Framework from the Departments of Education, Culture and Employment and Health and Social Services will give NWT children the right start by focusing on the important early years from prenatal to age five.  The departments collaborated on renewing the original 2001 Framework, incorporating new research, emerging information, best practices and techniques that reflect the most effective approaches to early childhood development.

YELLOWKNIFE (June 6, 2013) – Workshops being held across the NWT will help residents identify hazards and risks in their communities. Information gathered during these regional hazard identification risk assessments will be used to improve emergency planning and preparedness in the Northwest Territories. The workshops are being hosted by the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs.

YELLOWNIFE (June 5, 2013) – The Legislative Assembly has officially approved the Northwest Territories Lands and Resources Devolution Agreement.

YELLOWKNIFE (June 5, 2013) – Premier Bob McLeod will honour  individual employees, teams of employees and partners from outside the public service with Premier’s Awards for Excellence and Collaboration. Over 97 individuals will be honoured, including  the  recipient of the Dave Ramsden Career Excellence Award.

YELLOWKNIFE (June 4, 2013) – Applications for one of 16 $5,000 Northern Aviation Scholarships are now being accepted by the Government of Northwest Territories and its partners, the Government of Nunavut, Discovery Air, Keewatin Air, North-Wright Airways and First Air. The deadline for applications is July 26, 2013.

YELLOWKNIFE (June 4, 2013) – A stronger, environmentally sustainable and industry-friendly mineral development sector in the Northwest Territories is one step closer to reality following the release of Pathways to Mineral Development. The report was prepared by the Mineral Development Strategy (MDS) Stakeholder Engagement Panel and includes  recommendations to support a sustainable mineral exploration and development sector in the NWT.

YELLOWKNIFE (May 30, 2013) – The NWT Economic Opportunities Strategy (EOS) Advisory Panel has completed and delivered its What We Heard Report to the project’s Governance Committee.

As part of the process to develop the Strategy, the panel was tasked with engaging NWT residents and economic stakeholders in a series of discussions to identify regional economic opportunities and challenges.

YELLOWKNIFE (May 30, 2013) – Seven Northwest Territories residents were honoured this morning as inductees into the Education Hall of Fame, which recognizes the important and lasting contributions of those dedicated to education in the North.
