Call for 2013 NWT Fire Service Merit Award Nominees

YELLOWKNIFE (August 20, 2013) – The Department of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA) is seeking nominations for the NWT Fire Service Merit Awards.

Based on nominations from community members, fire departments and fire chiefs, the NWT Fire Service Merit Awards honour and recognize individuals and community fire departments for their significant contributions to fire safety and fire service in communities across the NWT.

Buckle Up NWT winner to be announced August 22

YELLOWKNIFE  (August 16, 2013) – Audits of seat-belt use have been conducted in all communities that registered for the Buckle Up NWT contest and a winner will be announced August 22.

Buckle Up NWT promotes the use of occupant restraints for drivers and passengers in the Northwest Territories. Leela Gilday and her band will perform in the winning community on September 7. The community’s fire department will receive $5,000. 

Growing Forward 2 Agricultural Program Launched in Northwest Territories

Yellowknife, Northwest Territories (August 13, 2013) – Today, Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz and Northwest Territories Industry, Tourism and Investment Minister David Ramsay announced Growing Forward 2 program details for the agricultural sector in the Northwest Territories (NWT).  The announcement follows the signing of the Canada-Northwest Territories Growing Forward 2 multilateral and bilateral contribution agreements.

GNWT’s Credit Rating of Aa1 Confirmed

YELLOWKNIFE (July 24, 2013)  The Government of the Northwest Territories’ Aa1 credit rating has been confirmed by Moody’s Investors Service. This is the second-highest credit rating Moody’s issues, and follows its annual review of the GNWT’s fiscal plans, outlook, and borrowing activity. The GNWT has maintained this high credit rating since 2008-09, indicating its sound fiscal strategy.

Lifejacket loaner station newest addition to Fred Henne Beach

YELLOWKNIFE (July 24, 2013) - A Lifejacket Loaner Station program will pilot this August at Fred Henne beach, providing free lifejackets for the public to borrow and then return after use for other patrons.

The GNWT is working in partnership with the Lifesaving Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories (Lifesaving Society), Canada’s expert on water safety, to put the pilot program in place. This is the first time a Lifesaving Society lifejacket loaner station will pilot in the Northwest Territories.

Premier McLeod congratulates the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the birth of their first child

YELLOWKNIFE (July 23, 2013) –Premier Bob McLeod congratulated Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the birth of their son.

“Starting a family is an exciting and rewarding time and I want to offer congratulations on behalf of all the people of the Northwest Territories,” said Premier McLeod. “Many residents have fond memories of Their Royal Highnesses’ visit to the Northwest Territories in July of 2011 and join with them in celebrating this news.”
