Northwest Territories Recipients Honoured During Literacy Week

YELLOWKNIFE (September 24, 2013) – Recipients of the Council of the Federation Literacy Award and the Ministerial Literacy Awards were honoured today during the annual Adult Learners’ Luncheon in Yellowknife.

The awards, created by the Minister of Education, Culture and Employment in 2002 and the Council of the Federation in 2005, recognize adult learners who have overcome learning and literacy challenges or championed literacy to learners of all ages.

Building momentum for Tourism in the NWT at Ministers Conference

WHITEHORSE (September 17, 2013) – Improving visitor access, marketing and tourism attraction development were central themes discussed at the Canadian Council of Tourism Ministers’ Meeting last week.

Federal, provincial and territorial tourism ministers met in in Whitehorse from September 11-13 to discuss the impact that international growth markets are having on Canada's tourism sector and share perspectives on strategies for capitalizing on opportunities in global tourism.

Buckle Up NWT winner Hay River to receive Leela Gilday concert

HAY RIVER (August 22, 2013) – The community of Hay River has been named as the winner of a Leela Gilday concert to be held on September 7  at the golf course.  The community successfully fended off challenges by five other communities that had participated in the Buckle Up NWT challenge.

Hay River won the free concert by having the highest percentage of residents wearing their seat belts. 84% of Hay River residents were wearing their seat belts in a recent seat belt survey administered by the Department of Transportation.

Premier McLeod welcomes federal investment in training for Northerners

HAY RIVER (August 20, 2013) – The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) welcomes today’s announcement of $5.9 million in federal funding to support training that will enable NWT residents to take advantage of current and future employment and business opportunities in the NWT mining sector.

Funding for the Mine Training Society’s Mining the Future project was announced today by Prime Minister Stephen Harper. The Prime Minister was joined by Premier Bob McLeod and Minister of Education, Culture and Employment Jackson Lafferty.
