In the Northwest Territories, the effects of climate change are intensifying. The Arctic is warming nearly four times faster than the rest of the planet. In recent years, extreme weather—floods, wildfires, and drought—has tested the resilience of our communities and underscored the urgent need for action.

New Community Wildfire Resilience Contributions program to advance FireSmart projects across the NWT

A new program is being launched to boost investment in organizations seeking to advance FireSmart initiatives across the Northwest Territories.

The Community Wildfire Resilience Contributions program will invest a maximum of $300,000 per applicant annually for projects that will advance the seven FireSmart disciplines.

Applications open for muskox tag draw

YELLOWKNIFE (April 2, 2025) – Applications for muskox tags are being accepted for the 2025-26 hunting season as of April 1, 2025. Northwest Territories’ (NWT) residents with a Resident Hunting Licence or a General Hunting Licence are able to apply for muskox tags in the Sahtu and North Slave areas. Applications can be obtained at your regional Environment and Climate Change office. All applications must be postmarked before May 15, 2025.

NWT Youth Water Stewardship and Mentorship Grant Program now accepting applications

Yellowknife, NT (March 25, 2025) - The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is now accepting applications for the NWT Youth Water Stewardship and Mentorship Grant Program, designed to empower young leaders in water stewardship. This program provides funding opportunities for youth aged 18-30 to lead community projects and events that support the vision and goals of Northern Voices, Northern Waters: The NWT Water Stewardship Strategy.

GNWT and Indigenous leaders call for respectful harvesting amid rising caribou wastage

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT), alongside Indigenous governments, Indigenous organizations and wildlife co-management partners, are urging harvesters to follow respectful harvesting practices as reports of illegal caribou wastage along the Tibbitt to Contwoyto Winter Road continue to rise.
