Public Safety Update: Reid Lake Fire, Highway 3

YELLOWKNIFE (August 13, 2015) – Fire ZF-014, near Reid Lake, is still a threat. The GNWT is working to suppress the fire and ensure the safety of the public. The following are updates from the various government agencies involved in the response to this wildfire.

The next Public Safety Update will be issued on Monday, August 17, 2015, unless the situation at the Reid Lake fire advances significantly before then.

GNWT to begin Thaidene Nëné Territorial Conservation Area engagement sessions

YELLOWKNIFE (July 10, 2015) - The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has been working collaboratively with Aboriginal governments and is pleased to announce that it has a proposed approach towards the establishment of a Thaidene Nëné territorial park and wildlife conservation areas. The collaborative approach ensures that the majority of the land within the TDN area remains under territorial management to best meet northern interests.

GNWT to sign climate change statement at Climate Summit of the Americas

TORONTO, ON (July 8, 2015) – The Government of the Northwest Territories will be a signatory to the Climate Summit of the Americas Common Statement. Minister of Environment and Natural Resources J. Michael Miltenberger will sign the Common Statement on behalf of the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) at the Climate Summit in Toronto, Ontario tomorrow.

J. Michael Miltenberger: 2015 Fire Season Forecast

Mr. Speaker, I do not wish to be the bearer of bad weather reports but as Mother Nature may have it, and based on the reports from our meteorologist, we will once again experience drought over the summer of 2015.

The prediction for this fire season is for another year of hot, dry weather. The downturn in weather for the next two days is unlikely to make much difference. It will be getting warmer and drier in all regions starting on Wednesday.

Report of the 2014 Fire Season Review now available

YELLOWKNIFE (May 5, 2015) – A report on the review of 2014 Fire Season Review was released today by Minister of Environment and Natural Resources J. Michael Miltenberger.

“The extraordinary extent of the 2014 fire season, with 385 fires, $56.1 million in cost and impacts on about 3.4 million hectares of forest resource, warranted a thorough review to determine lessons learned and identify areas where improvements can be made to our fire operations policies, practices and procedures,” said Miltenberger.
