GNWT Enters Third Year of Waste Paper Products Initiative

March 1, 2011 - Applications are now being accepted for the third year of the Waste Paper Products Recycling Initiative in the Northwest Territories (NWT).

The three-year funding initiative provides financial assistance to NWT municipalities, organizations, businesses, and individuals to initiate and develop innovative ways to reuse waste paper and cardboard products destined for landfills.

Phase 2 of the Single Use Retail Bag Fee Implemented

February 1, 2011 - Beginning today, all paper, plastic and biodegradable bags will cost 25 cents in all Northwest Territories (NWT) stores.

“When we think about the three R’s – reduce, reuse, and recycle – it is the first R (reduce) that is the most important,” said the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources (ENR), J. Michael Miltenberger. “This program is a great example of a waste reduction program: the fewer bags that we use mean the fewer natural resources we consume and the less waste we produce.”

Presentation on Water Management and the Mackenzie River Basin

January 14, 2011 - There will be a special public presentation on water management and the Mackenzie River Basin next Tuesday in Yellowknife.

The presentation, The Last Great River – The Present and Future of the Mackenzie River Basin, will feature a variety of panel presenters, including GNWT Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Michael Miltenberger who will speak to the NWT Water Stewardship Strategy as a foundation for the future of the NWT and the North.

January 11, 2011 - Winter is here! Keep warm with a heat recovery ventilator and hot water heater, and get a rebate of up to $800 when you purchase these and other Energy Efficiency Incentive Program (EEIP) products.

The EEIP was designed to help homeowners and consumers purchase new, more energy efficient models of products that they use every day.  Buying energy efficient products will help you save energy costs while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Community Meetings on Draft Wildlife Act Underway

November 26, 2010 - The Department of Environment and Natural Resources is hosting community meetings on the proposed new Wildlife Act for the Northwest Territories.

This is an opportunity for residents to learn about the proposed new Wildlife Act and provide their input on this important wildlife legislation before it is introduced in the Legislative Assembly during the 2011 winter session.

Meetings are planned for all NWT communities during the next several weeks.

ENR Minister to Present at International Water Conference

November 15, 2010 - Environment and Natural Resources Minister J. Michael Miltenberger is in Buenos Aires, Argentina to participate in the Seventh Biennial Rosenberg International Forum on Water Policy.

Minister Miltenberger will be making a presentation on the “Importance of Traditional Knowledge” at the “Water for the Americas:  Challenges and Opportunities” conference.
