December 8, 2011 - Mr. Speaker, it would be nice to be able to announce that we are starting the 17^th Legislative Assembly with a booming economy and enough fiscal resources to make all the strategic investments we need to further strengthen the economy.

October 21, 2011 - For September 2011, Statistics Canada estimates that 23,800 out of 32,200 residents 15 years of age and older were employed in the Northwest Territories, representing an employment rate  of 73.9%. Overall, Canada’s employment rate stood at 62.6% in September. Since August 2011, employment in the NWT rose by 300 persons.

September 21, 2011 - Information released today by Statistics Canada indicates that the Yellowknife All-Items Consumer Price Index rose 3.4% from August 2010. By comparison, the annual price increase was 3.1% for Canada, 3.0% for Edmonton, and 3.0% for Whitehorse.

August 24, 2011 - Information released today by Statistics Canada indicates that the Yellowknife All-Items Consumer Price Index rose 3.4% from July 2010. By comparison, the annual price increase was 2.7% for Canada, 1.9% for Edmonton, and 3.1% for Whitehorse.

August 17, 2011 - Minister of Finance summarizes the achievements of the 16th Assembly including almost $297 million in new initiatives.

Mr. Speaker, as this is the last Session of the 16^th Legislative Assembly, I would like to take this opportunity to update Members and NWT residents on our fiscal and economic outlook and to describe the difficult decisions that will be facing the 17^th Legislative Assembly.

August 8, 2011 - For July 2011, Statistics Canada estimates that 23,200 out of 32,100 residents 15 years of age and older were employed in the Northwest Territories, representing an employment rate of 72.3%. Overall, Canada’s employment rate stood at 62.9% in July.

Compared to the previous month, employment rose by 600 persons with an additional 600 new entrants to the labour force. The gains in labour force and employment were observed mostly for persons 15 to 24 years of age.

March 1, 2011 - Today, during Session, the Minister of Finance provided some clarity on the financial aspects of the Devolution Agreement-in-Principle.

February 15, 2011 - The feasibility of running a fibre optics cable from the south of the Northwest Territories to Inuvik, and eventually to Tuktoyaktuk, is being studied by the Government of the Northwest Territories.

The Minister of Finance, J. Michael Miltenberger, says the fibre link is important in improving data communications for both the public and private sector in the communities along the route.
