Canadian Tire Brings ACTIVE AT SCHOOL movement to the Northwest Territories

YELLOWKNIFE (June 2, 2015) – Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA) Robert C. McLeod and Mr. Landon French, Vice-President, Community Relations at Canadian Tire Corporation, announced a new partnership agreement which will provide $225,000 towards equipment training and capacity building for after school physical activity programs through ACTIVE AT SCHOOL.

Robert C. McLeod: Canada Winter Games

Mr. Speaker, today I am pleased to recognize the members of Team Northwest Territories who represented our territory at the 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George, British Columbia from February 13 to March 1. The 139 athletes, coaches and mission staff were from 11 communities in the Northwest Territories including Aklavik, Deline, Fort McPherson, Fort Providence, Fort Simpson, Fort Smith, Hay River, Inuvik, N’dilo, Sachs Harbour and Yellowknife.

GNWT contributes $400,000 in ground ambulance and highway rescue funding

YELLOWKNIFE (March 5, 2015) – The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) continues to support community government projects that promote public safety by increasing response capability of local fire and ambulance services through the Ground Ambulance and Highway Rescue Funding Program. In 2014/15, the GNWT provided $400,000 in funding to communities through this program, an increase of $200,000 from previous years.

Robert C. McLeod: Safe Communities

Mr. Speaker, three years ago, the 17th Legislative Assembly made it a priority to establish sustainable, vibrant, safe communities. Today, I want to speak about some of the work being done by the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs to help reach that goal by strengthening community emergency preparedness and fire protection.

Sport, recreation and physical activity partners meet

YELLOWKNIFE (January 21, 2015) – Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA) Robert C. McLeod met with Northwest Territories (NWT) sport and recreation non-government organizations January 10-11 to discuss future plans and opportunities. Discussions included a review of current priorities and how MACA can support the sector. These discussions will contribute to the development of recommendations for consideration by the 18th Legislative Assembly.

Call for Nominations for the 2014 NWT Outstanding Volunteer Awards

YELLOWKNIFE (January 8, 2015) – Earlier this week, Robert C. McLeod, Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA), announced a call for nominations for the Northwest Territories (NWT) Outstanding Volunteer Awards. This year marks the 25th year of this award, which recognizes the remarkable contributions volunteers make in communities across the Northwest Territories (NWT).
