GNWT Congratulates FOXY on winning Arctic Inspiration Prize

YELLOWKNIFE (December 12, 2014) – The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is congratulating FOXY (Fostering Open eXpression among Youth), recipients of the third annual Arctic Inspiration Prize announced Wednesday night in Ottawa.Premier McLeod spoke today about the importance of empowering young women in the NWT and the key role they play as our future leaders.

Robert C. McLeod – Alternative Arctic Winter Games

Mr. Speaker, we are just over 16 months away from the next Arctic Winter Games being hosted in Nuuk, Greenland. As you know, there are six sports which Greenland is unable to host (Dog Mushing, Gymnastics, Curling, Speed Skating, Figure Skating and Midget Hockey). Today, I am pleased to announce that Whitehorse, Yukon has agreed to host an “alternative multi-sport event”; the Arctic X Games, to coincide with the 2016 Arctic Winter Games in Greenland.

2014 NWT Fire Service Merit Award Recipients Announced

YELLOWKNIFE (October 14, 2014) – Each year during National Fire Prevention Week Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs Robert C. McLeod recognizes members of the NWT Fire Service for their work in protecting our families and homes from the threat of fire by awarding the annual Fire Service Merit Awards.

“Firefighters and fire departments are an integral part of our community emergency response,” said Minister McLeod. “Recognizing those who selflessly protect our homes and families is important and these awards are one small way we can say thank you.”

Ensure Home Fire Safety during National Fire Prevention Week

YELLOWKNIFE (October 6, 2014) – NWT residents are being invited to check their homes to ensure adequate fire safety measures are in place by filling out a simple questionnaire during National Fire Prevention Week, October 5-11. Residents with children in grades 7 and under who participate by filling out a Home Fire Safety Checklist will be entered in a prize draw.

Call for 2014 NWT Fire Service Merit Award Nominees

YELLOWKNIFE (September 12, 2014) – The Department of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA) is seeking nominations for the NWT Fire Service Merit Awards.

Based on nominations from community members, fire departments and fire chiefs, the NWT Fire Service Merit Awards honour and recognize individuals and community fire departments for their significant contributions to fire safety and fire service in communities across the NWT.

Municipal Administrator Appointed in Fort McPherson

YELLOWKNIFE (July 22, 2014) – Under authority provided by the Hamlets Act, the Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs has appointed Bill Buckle as Municipal Administrator for the Hamlet of Fort McPherson effective July 17, 2014 for an indeterminate term. The appointment of an Administrator means that the hamlet council has been dissolved; all responsibilities of council are now being handled by the Administrator in cooperation with the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA).

Robert C. McLeod – Community Emergency Preparedness

Mr. Speaker, two years ago, the 17th Legislative Assembly made supporting sustainable, vibrant, safe communities one of its goals. Today, I wish to advise Members on Municipal and Community Affairs’ efforts to help achieve that important goal. I am referring to efforts that are underway to help ensure the safety and security of Northwest Territories residents by assisting with community emergency preparedness.

NWT Announces Emergency Preparedness Week Contest Winners

YELLOWKNIFE (May 27, 2014) – During the 2014 National Emergency Preparedness Week the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs asked residents to educate themselves on personal emergency preparedness with a chance to enter their names into a draw for one of two family emergency kits.

After many successful responses from across the Northwest Territories all entries were entered in a draw and two winners were selected. The winners of the 2014 Emergency Preparedness Challenge are:
