Appointments to the Status of Women Council

December 8, 2011 - Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Tina Gargan as the President of the Status of Women Council Board.  Ms. Gargan is serving her second term on the Council as the Deh Cho representative.  She is a recipient of the 2006 Wise Women Award, fluent in her own language, the recently acclaimed mayor of Fort Providence and a proud mother of two children.

As Premier of the Northwest Territories and on behalf of all of those gathered here today, I would like to wish you all the very best for your visit to this unique region of Canada, fundamental to this country’s past and its future.

Sessional Statement

December 7, 2011 - Mr. Speaker, I would like to welcome all Members back to the continuation of the first Session of the 17th Assembly. In this sitting, we will review the Capital Estimates for next fiscal year and began to debate some important issues.  I believe all Members of this House have a shared interest in creating an environmentally sustainable and prosperous territory for all the people we serve.  Despite some significant challenges, our Territory is strong, and we are even stronger when we work together. 

Premier appears at Tlicho Assembly

November 22, 2011 – Premier Bob McLeod attended the Tlicho Assembly Thursday, November 17 to discuss the government’s work and priorities with the leaders of the Tlicho Government. This is the first time an NWT premier has appeared at the Tlicho Assembly, and the third time Premier McLeod has met with Tlicho leaders since being elected. The most recent meeting was on November 3.

Premier meets with Sahtu leadership

November 16, 2011 – Premier Bob McLeod met with Sahtu leadership Monday, November 14, 2011 as part of the GNWT’s continuing commitment to work with Aboriginal and community leaders.

“We have a shared interest in creating a strong and prosperous territory,” said Premier McLeod. “We continued our discussions from the successful meeting we held in Dettah just after the territorial election. The Sahtu leaders were very clear about their vision for the region. I know we can work together to build consensus and move forward as a territory.”

NWT Premier and Cabinet Ready to Get to Work

November 7, 2011 - Premier Bob McLeod and the Cabinet of the 17th Legislative Assembly held a day-long planning retreat at the Sah Naji Kwe Lodge near Behchoko on Nov. 3, 2011. Discussions included approaches to engaging with NWT Aboriginal leaders, the timeline around establishing a Cabinet agenda for implementing the priorities of the 17th Legislative Assembly, improving government communications, Devolution and managing relations with federal, provincial and territorial governments.

Premier McLeod Announces Ministerial Portfolios

November 2, 2011 - Promising a renewed focus on working together to promote the interests of all the people of the Northwest Territories (NWT), Premier Bob McLeod today announced portfolio assignments for the recently chosen Cabinet.

“We have challenges and opportunities ahead of us,” said Premier McLeod. “The people of the NWT are relying on us to work together to seize opportunities and resolve issues. MLAs have selected a Cabinet with a good balance of experienced and new Ministers who will bring their skills and energy to get the job done.”

Vince Sharpe Receives Congratulations from GNWT

November 1, 2011 - Premier Bob McLeod, together with Inuvik MLAs Robert C. McLeod and Alfred Moses, is today congratulating Inuvik’s Vince Sharpe for receiving the Governor General’s Medal of Bravery.

Mr. Sharpe received the award Friday, Oct. 28, from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston in recognition for his actions to rescue two occupants from a burning trailer home, in Inuvik.
