Fourth Intergovernmental Meeting between Sahtu Secretariat Inc. and GNWT

NORMAN WELLS (May 11, 2017) – Cabinet Members of the 18th Legislative Assembly and Premier Bob McLeod met with the Sahtu Secretariat Incorporated Chairperson Ethel Blondin-Andrew, Sahtu Dene Council Chiefs, leaders of the Sahtu Land Corporations and Délı̨nę Got’ı̨nę Government  in Norman Wells yesterday afternoon.

This was the fourth meeting of the Sahtu Secretariat Incorporated (SSI) and the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) since they signed the Intergovernmental Memorandum of Understanding on June 24, 2015.

SEED Reforms Enhance Support for Business

YELLOWKNIFE (May 8, 2017) – The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) is increasing the amount of funding that it provides to NWT entrepreneurs and small businesses under its signature Support for Entrepreneurs and Economic Development (SEED) Programs.

The increased funding amounts come following an internal review of the SEED policy and in response to rising costs and feedback received from NWT Business owners.

Enhancements have been made to the Entrepreneur Support, Micro Business, and Business Intelligence and Networking streams.

Work underway to support cannabis legalization in Northwest Territories

YELLOWKNIFE (April 20, 2017) – The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has begun the necessary work to prepare for the legalization of cannabis following the tabling of federal legislation in the House of Commons last week.

The GNWT established a multi-departmental cannabis working group in 2016 in response to federal plans to table legislation sometime in early 2017. The working group will now review the legislation to determine next steps to ensure the GNWT is prepared for legalization in July 2018.

Changes to Non-Insured Health Benefits

YELLOWKNIFE (April 18, 2017) – In response to Health Canada’s recent announcement that expecting mothers covered by the Federal NIHB program who have to travel outside of their home community to give birth will now be supported by one non-medical escort, the Department of Health and Social Services will extend this benefit to residents eligible under the Metis Health Benefits Policy and to non-indigenous mothers also.

Canadian Free Trade Agreement Signals Opportunities for Growth in Canada’s North

YELLOWKNIFE (April 7, 2017) – The new Canadian Free Trade Agreement (CFTA) will make it easier for Northwest Territories (NWT) residents to do business across Canada while making allowances for the unique economic circumstances that exist in Canada’s North.

The new Agreement focuses on reducing barriers to trade, investment and employee mobility to promote economic growth within Canada. The CFTA will replace the Agreement on Internal Trade (AIT) on July 1, 2017.

Last week’s announcement from Mediacorp, Canada Inc. cites the creation of the GNWT’s Diversity and Inclusion Unit, along with the ongoing work of the GNWT Advisory Committee on Employability and Aboriginal Employees Advisory Committee as key reasons for the selection.
