Minister meets with Education Board Chairs

YELLOWKNIFE (September 15, 2017) - Minister of Education, Culture and Employment, Alfred Moses, met with Education Board Chairs last Friday to highlight strategies to address mental health and wellness of students and teachers.  The group has decided to take a thematic approach to their meetings focusing on such matters as indigenizing education, student support and Skills 4 Success.

Supporting Children and Seniors in the NWT

YELLOWKNIFE (September 15, 2017) – The Minister of Education, Culture and Employment is pleased to announce the two latest improvements to Income Security Programs in the Northwest Territories (NWT).                                            

The Senior Citizen Supplementary Benefit will improve support for seniors, and the NWT Child Benefit is better supporting families with children across the NWT.

GNWT Submits Expressions of Interest for Federal Funding for Key Transportation Corridors

YELLOWKNIFE (September 12, 2017) - The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has submitted Expressions of Interest to the Government of Canada seeking funding for two major transportation infrastructure projects:   construction of the Slave Geological Province Access Corridor (SGP);  and projects to advance the Mackenzie Valley Highway(MVH).  Making strategic investments in transportation infrastructure and securing funding for these particular projects is a key “Economy, Environment and Climate Change” mandate item of the 18th Legislative Assembly.

Government of the Northwest Territories Confirms location of long-term Sobering Centre

YELLOWKNIFE (September 12, 2017) – The Minister of Health and Social Services, Glen Abernethy, announced that the government has signed a lease for a long-term location of the Yellowknife Day Shelter and Yellowknife Sobering Centre. The building is located at 5111 50th Street.

Finding a location for the Yellowknife Sobering Centre which can also support the Day Shelter program has been a priority of the Government of Northwest Territories. The new location was chosen after assessing 22 potential sites in order to find a suitable location.

Mobile addictions program piloted in Fort Smith

FORT SMITH (September 11, 2017) – A community-based mobile addictions pilot program is being delivered in Fort Smith that is responding to a need identified by elders and community members for culturally-safe addictions programming. The program is made possible by a collaboration between the Government of the Northwest Territories, the Salt River First Nation (SFRN) and Poundmaker’s Lodge Treatment Centres, which is a facility of excellence with a long standing history of supporting NWT residents in their healing.

Premier McLeod announces appointment of new Deputy Minister of Health and Social Services

YELLOWKNIFE (September 5, 2017) – Premier Bob McLeod today announced the appointment of Bruce Cooper as the Deputy Minister of Health and Social Services (HSS) for the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT).

Mr. Cooper comes to the GNWT from the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador (GNL) with over a decade of experience as an executive in the public service, including five years as Deputy Minister of Health and Community Services. He is currently Deputy Minister of the Department of Children, Seniors and Social Development for the GNL.

Celebrating Indigenous Northerners’ contributions to policing through new exhibit on Special Constables in the NWT

YELLOWKNIFE (August 4, 2017) - A new exhibit opened yesterday at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre to recognize and celebrate Indigenous Northerners’ contributions as they worked hand-in-hand with the RCMP in the early days of the Northwest Territories. 

Presented as a Canada 150 event, the exhibit is a collaborative effort between the Government of the Northwest Territories, the RCMP and the people of the Northwest Territories who contributed their stories.

Engagement on New Mineral Resources Act

YELLOWKNIFE (August 2, 2017)The Northwest Territories is one step closer to developing mineral legislation that reflects the unique circumstances of the mineral sector in the North, and is seeking input from northerners into the development of a Minerals Resources Act.

The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) has begun public stakeholder engagements on the development of the Territory’s first homegrown mineral legislation, and has launched an interactive engagement tool to help solicit feedback.

News Release: GNWT Introduces Changes to the Vital Statistics Act

YELLOWKNIFE (July 28, 2017) – The GNWT has introduced two important changes to the Vital Statistics Act that promote inclusion and respect:  the ability to use single names based on traditional culture, and changing the sex designation on a birth certificate to better reflect gender identity.

Single traditional name as legal name

NWT residents can now use single traditional names as their legal name, as long as it is based on their traditional culture.

GNWT to hear from residents on "made-in-the-NWT" carbon price

YELLOWKNIFE (July 26, 2017) – The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is seeking public input on how we best to move forward in developing a plan for carbon pricing in the NWT that provides incentives for residents, business and industry to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while limiting the effects on cost of living and economic development.

This request for input comes as a result of the GNWT’s commitment as a signatory to the Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Energy and Climate Change to participate in national carbon pricing.
