GNWT launches a dynamic, digital celebration of 50 years of government in the NWT

YELLOWKNIFE (December 18, 2017) – Today, Premier Bob McLeod announced the release of a special digital multimedia project commissioned to commemorate 50 years of government in the Northwest Territories.

As the year comes to a close, the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is proudly reflecting on what has been accomplished over the last 50 years – particularly the contributions made by the dedicated public servants.

New 'X' Gender Option Now Available on NWT Driver’s Licences

YELLOWKNIFE (December 11, 2017) – Residents of the Northwest Territories (NWT) now have the option to display an 'X' in the sex section of driver's licence and identification cards issued by the Department of Infrastructure.

This change helps to ensure services offered by the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) are inclusive and respectful of transgender, two-spirit, intersex, and non-binary residents.

GNWT and NWT Seniors’ Society partner to improve seniors’ programs and services

YELLOWKNIFE (November 29, 2017) – Minister Responsible for Seniors Glen Abernethy and NWT Seniors’ Society Past President Leon Peterson announced a new partnership today to develop a report card on Government of the Territories (GNWT) programs and services for seniors. The report card will be an opportunity to inventory and assess the effectiveness of GNWT programs and services either designed for or accessed by seniors, determine how well they are meeting seniors’ needs  and identify areas for potential improvement or better coordination.

The Government of the Northwest Territories proposes a way forward for the legalisation of cannabis in the NWT

YELLOWKNIFE (NOVEMBER 24, 2017) – Minister of Justice Louis Sebert released the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) proposed plan for legalizing cannabis in the NWT today. This is an important step in designing a system that will provide controlled access to a safe supply of recreational cannabis for NWT residents in order to maintain the health and safety of residents and communities across the North.

Alberta and Northwest Territories Release First Joint Report on Bilateral Water Agreement

YELLOWKNIFE (November 21, 2017) – The Government of Alberta and the Government of the Northwest Territories are pleased to report on the outcomes of the first year of implementation of the Alberta-Northwest Territories Transboundary Water Management Agreement to maintain the ecological integrity of our shared waters.

Working Together to Manage Our Shared Waters, released today, is the inaugural annual report of the bilateral committee responsible for implementing the Agreement.

Government of the Northwest Territories Releases the 2016-2017 Public Accounts

YELLOWKNIFE (November 8, 2017)– Today, Robert C. McLeod, Minister for the Department of Finance with the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) released the GNWT Public Account information for 2016-17.

In an effort to meet the GNWT’s commitment to improve openness and transparency, the Public Accounts are being released to the public prior to being tabled in the Legislative Assembly. Accompanying the Public Accounts is a plain language companion document intended to be used as a tool to help the public better understand their government’s finances.

Spectacular Parks Hospitality Honoured

INUVIK (NOVEMBER 6, 2017) —  Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment Wally Schumann recognized one of the personalities creating the Northwest Territories’ global reputation for hospitality last week.

2017’s NWT Parks Hospitality Award was handed out to Jean Marie River’s Lucy Simon, camp attendant at Sambaa Deh Territorial Park, in recognition of a year full of outstanding camper comments and excellent hospitality.

Salvation Army Signs Six Month Lease to Operate Sobering Centre

YELLOWKNIFE (October 27, 2017) - The Minister of Health and Social Services, Glen Abernethy, announced that the government has signed a six month lease with the Salvation Army in Yellowknife for a Yellowknife Sobering Centre location.

The temporary location will provide services to those in need while the long-term location located at 5111 50th street is being renovated. The Salvation Army sobering centre location will be operated by the NWT Disability Council with Advanced Medical Solutions providing clinical services as needed.
