Coming Together to Prepare for Opportunities in the Sahtu

NORMAN WELLS (September 26, 2012) -- The Sahtu Exploration Readiness Session is taking place in Norman Wells this week, with over 100 representatives from industry, government, Aboriginal organizations and corporations, community leaders and small business in attendance to discuss and identify the best ways to prepare for the boom in exploration that will take place in the region over the coming years.

NWT recipients honoured during Literacy Week

YELLOWKNIFE (September 25, 2012) – Recipients of the Council of the Federation Literacy Award and the Ministerial Literacy Awards were honoured today during the annual Adult Learners’ Luncheon in Yellowknife.

These awards were created by the Council of the Federation in 2005 and the Minister of Education, Culture and Employment in 2002 to recognize adult learners who have overcome learning and literacy challenges or championed literacy to learners of all ages.

Celebrating the diversity of NWT art during Arts Week

YELLOWKNIFE (September 25, 2012) -- Northwest Territories Arts Week is from September 22 to 30 and is a celebration of the contribution that the NWT arts and fine crafts community makes to our territory.   “Artisans make significant cultural and economic contributions to communities across the territory and showcase the NWT as a place of artistic excellence,” said Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) David Ramsay.

NWT Celebrates Literacy Week

YELLOWKNIFE (September 24, 2012) – September 23rd to 29th is Literacy Week in the Northwest Territories.

The Department of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE), the NWT Literacy Council and local communities are sponsoring events and activities across our territory to highlight the importance of literacy to NWT residents. 

Premier and NWT Business Representatives Explore Opportunities in China

HONG KONG, CHINA (September 20, 2012) – Premier Bob McLeod, MLA Robert Hawkins, Chair of the Standing Committee on Economic Development and Infrastructure, and the NWT business delegation met with potential Chinese investors and business partners to discuss ways to diversify the NWT economy and keep the territory prosperous. The meetings have focused on the potential for developing the Chinese markets for the NWT’s wild fur, oil and gas.

Minister Beaulieu returns from the Canada Northwest Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder meeting

YELLOWKNIFE (September 19, 2012) – Minister of Health and Social Services Tom Beaulieu attended the Canada Northwest Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Partnership Ministers’ Meeting on September 14 and 15 in Saskatoon.  The meeting, chaired by Saskatchewan Social Services Minister June Draude, celebrated the achievements of the Partnership and discussed its future.

Territorial justice ministers work together on northern issues

WHITEHORSE (September 18, 2012) — Territorial justice ministers Mike Nixon of Yukon, Glen Abernethy of Northwest Territories, and Daniel Shewchuk of Nunavut met today in Whitehorse to discuss justice and public safety issues of particular concern to the North.

As host, Nixon shared some of his department’s recent successes and innovations including the establishment of the Yukon Police Council, the Justice Wellness Centre, and Yukon’s integrated offender management program.

New Agreement Provides $6 Million Investment in NWT Agriculture

YELLOWKNIFE (September 17, 2012) -- Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment David Ramsay has given his support to the multi-lateral Growing Forward 2 Agreement for Agriculture. This sets the stage for bilateral negotiations to take place between the federal and territorial governments on a new five-year joint funding agreement for agriculture in the NWT. Ministers of Agriculture and Agri-foods met in Whitehorse last week.
