Strategies Aim to Increase Use of Biomass and Solar Energy in the NWT

YELLOWKNIFE (November 21, 2012) – Two new GNWT strategies will increase the use of biomass and solar energy in the Northwest Territories.

“We are looking at all the ways we can minimize our costs and reliance on fossil fuels in the long term,” said Michael Miltenberger, Minister of Environment and Natural Resources. “The Biomass Energy Strategy and the Solar Energy Strategy outline actions to further establish these renewable energy technologies as an integral part of the NWT energy mix.”

Trappers to benefit from increased fur payments

 YELLOWKNIFE (November 15, 2012) - The fur advance and prime fur bonus payments for selected species have been increased for this season’s trapping season.

“Last season’s wild fur harvests were record-setting and we anticipate our NWT trappers will have another great season this year,” said Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment David Ramsay. “By increasing payments to trappers, we are encouraging them to have another productive season so their families and communities continue to benefit.”

The use of the right child car seat - Another Healthy Choice

YELLOWKNIFE (November 14, 2012) – Certified child car seat technicians are now in place in the Northwest Territories.

Eight certified technicians from Fort Simpson, Hay River, Fort Smith, and Yellowknife were trained in car seat installation last week. Graduates applied their new training in a car seat education clinic last Friday afternoon at the Yellowknife Canadian Tire store.

Launch of the Volunteer Support Initiative

YELLOWKNIFE (November 9, 2012) – Today Robert C. McLeod, Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA) and Minister Responsible for Youth, released an updated strategic plan supporting volunteer development in the Northwest Territories (NWT).

“The Volunteer Support Initiative is a strategy designed to help build the next generation of NWT volunteers” said McLeod.  “We need to continue supporting the great work being done by today’s volunteers and look to the future by building that same spirit in youth”.

Blackstone Territorial Park employee recognized for excellent service

YELLOWKNIFE (November 9, 2012) – Sharing his culture, going above and beyond to help visitors explore exciting activities in the area, and a welcoming nature were characteristics noted about Parks Hospitality Award winner Raymond Michaud.

Presenting the 2012 award at the NWT Tourism Gala and Awards Dinner last night, Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment David Ramsay commended Mr. Michaud for his dedication to the tourism industry.

NWT Youth Ambassadors selected

YELLOWKNIFE (November 9, 2012) – Forty-three new youth ambassadors and four returning youth mentors from across the Northwest Territories (NWT) have been selected to participate in the 2012-2013 NWT Youth Ambassador Program by the Honourable Robert C. McLeod, Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs.

Longest-serving MLAs receive Diamond Jubilee Medals

YELLOWKNIFE (November 7, 2012) – Commissioner George Tuccaro, Premier Bob McLeod, and Speaker Jackie Jacobson presented Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals to the longest-serving members of the Legislative Assembly yesterday.

Michael Miltenberger, MLA Thebacha, and Jane Groenewegen, MLA Hay River South, have served in the Legislative Assembly continuously since their first elections in October 1995. Both have served as Cabinet Ministers, including terms as Deputy Premier.
