National Addictions Awareness Week

November 14, 2010 - National Addictions Awareness Week (NAAW) is observed across Canada every year during the third week of November. This year NAAW is November 14-20, 2010.

NAAW is an important opportunity to focus on the harms associated with alcohol, drugs, tobacco, and gambling. This year, the theme for NAAW is Celebrating Healthy Choices as it promotes addiction free lifestyles for individuals, families and communities.

During the Week, communities across the NWT will be hosting events:

10,000 Years of Recycling

November 11, 2010 - Amazing Family Sundays presents: 10,000 Years of Recycling, November 14, 2 – 3 pm at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Center.

What’s new is really old! Join Stephanie Yuill for a journey into the recycling past, long before blue bins and bottle deposits. Through hands-on activities, props, a bit of drama and a whole lot of fun, you’ll get the goods on the original reducers, re-users, and recyclers.

Traditional Games & Sport Coaching

November 5, 2010 - The Department of Municipal and Community Affairs is offering the next course, Traditional Games and Sport Coaching, in the Recreation Leadership program,  November 15 - 20, 2010 in Inuvik.

The Traditional Games and Sport Coaching course introduces the student to all aspects of traditional Dene and Inuit games and the coaching skills needed to instruct athletes participating in the games. Community Coaching certification will also be provided through the course.

"War: What is the Cost?"

November 5, 2010 - Terry Pamplin presents "War: What is the Cost?", a meditation on war featuring music and live painting.

Performances are November 12 & 13 at 8:00pm, at the Museum Cafe, Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre.  Donations will be accepted at the door towards the Canadian Landmine Foundation.

Music performed by Theresa Baird, Catherine Brandon, Maureen Crotty-Williams, Azure DeGrow, Peter Maguire, Jo Russell, Susan Shantora.

Amazing Family Sundays

November 4, 2010 - Amazing Family Sundays returns to the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre this Sunday, November 7, with the opening of the René Fumoleau exhibit, Seasons of Beauty. The exhibit will be on display until May 2011.

Minister of Health and Social Services Attends Flu Shot Clinic

YELLOWKNIFE (October 22, 2010) - The Minister of Health and Social Services Sandy Lee will be attending the first public flu clinic at Northern United Place in Yellowknife on October 25, 2010 at noon to receive her seasonal flu shot.

Each year, the flu shot is provided free of charge to the public as a means of helping to prevent the flu.  People from six months to five years, as well as seniors and other high risk groups are urged to get the flu shot to protect themselves and others from the annual flu bug.
