Tourism Mentorship Programs Welcoming Applicants

YELLOWKNIFE (October 19, 2016) – Two tourism mentorship programs are now accepting applications from Northwest Territories (NWT) residents interested in gaining insight and experience in the tourism industry.

The Youth Mentorship for Tourism Program and Tourism Business Mentorship Program are provided through the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) and offer training opportunities for students, young professionals, and those new to the tourism industry.

Call for Applications for the 2016-2017 Youth Ambassador Program

YELLOWKNIFE (October 17, 2016) – The Department of Municipal and Community Affairs is now accepting applications for the 2016-2017 Northwest Territories (NWT) Youth Ambassador Program. The program provides NWT youth with opportunities to build leadership skills through participation at special events and volunteer assignments.  In the past, NWT Youth Ambassadors have attended the Arctic Winter Games, Canada Winter Games, Canada Summer Games, and the North American Indigenous Games.

Community-curated exhibit celebrates 30th Anniversary of Expo 86

YELLOWKNIFE (September 27, 2016) – The public is invited to the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Northwest Territories Pavilion at Expo 86.

The NWT pavilion at Expo 86 showcased the culture of our territory on an international stage. Hundreds of northerners were involved in making it one of the most popular pavilions, attracting over 1.5 million visitors.

2015-2016 NWT Trapper Recognition Program award winners announced

YELLOWKNIFE (September 27, 2016) – The NWT Trapper Recognition Program recognizes the hard work NWT trappers put into their craft and the well-earned contribution they bring to the economy.  The Department of Environment and Natural Resources would like to congratulate the 2015-2016 NWT trapper award winners.

Awards are given out to the top trapper in each region for four categories:

GNWT to test NWT Alert Ready

YELLOWKNIFE (September 19, 2016) The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) will issue a live test of NWT Alert Ready, the public alerting system for the Northwest Territories, on September 21, 2016 at 9:55am,

Residents may see and hear the public alert test on radio stations and cable networks across the NWT.

Extended Season Offered at Blackstone Territorial Park

YELLOWKNIFE (September 15, 2016) - NWT Parks close for the season on September 15, but this year campers will have access to Blackstone Territorial Park until October 15.

The extended season for the Dehcho Region Park is a trial run to gauge interest and demand. Aurora viewers and hunters are expected to make up the majority of visitors during the extended season at Blackstone Territorial Park.

Public access to Ptarmigan mine site restricted while work underway

YELLOWKNIFE (September 12, 2016) – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources advises access to the Ptarmigan Mine will be restricted this fall because of work being carried out at the site.

A contractor will be conducting an environmental assessment to determine the extent of contamination at the Ptarmigan Mine site. The work will be carried out during September and October.

Similar work is also being done at the Tom, Crestaurum, Tin and Burwash Mine sites.

Survey reveals increase in Mackenzie bison population

YELLOWKNIFE (September 9, 2016) – A 2016 survey of the Mackenzie bison population indicates a slight increase in the number of animals with an estimate of 850 in 2016 compared to the estimate of 700 in 2013.

The survey was conducted by Environment and Natural Resources staff and five observers from Fort Providence between February 20 and March 6, 2016. Weather conditions ranged from good to excellent for counting wildlife from the air.

The next population survey for the Mackenzie bison population is planned for 2019.
