National Addictions Awareness Week 2025

National Addictions Awareness Week is recognized across Canada each November. It offers an opportunity for NWT residents to raise awareness about substance use and addiction, promote prevention and harm reduction, and encourage open conversations about treatment and recovery. This year’s theme, “Anchoring Hope”, highlights the value of speaking openly about substance use, which can help foster connection, support healing, and lead to positive change.

To help address these challenges, the Government of the Northwest Territories has released the Equitable Access Methodology Report, a key milestone in the journey to transform how care is delivered, experienced and supported across the territory.

Public Engagement on the Mineral Resources Act Policy Intentions

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is developing regulations to bring the Mineral Resources Act (MRA) into effect and is seeking public feedback on the first set of policy intentions. These cover mineral resources administration (rules for exploration, development, and operation of mines), drill cores, and the removal of minerals.

GNWT Modernizes IT Procurement with New MSP Model

The Government of the Northwest Territories is introducing a Managed Service Provider (MSP) model to improve how it sources short-term IT professional services, making it easier for the GNWT to access these specialized services.

Under the MSP model, the GNWT will work with a centralized provider, selected through a competitive procurement process, to manage IT service opportunities under $300,000.

This approach is designed to support project-based work where specialized skills are needed temporarily. Internal staff remain essential for core operations and oversight.

Have your say: Public Safety Legislation

The GNWT is working to provide residents with more laws to protect property, report problem residences that are used for illegal activities, seize assets from traffickers, and deter crime. The GNWT is developing new Civil Forfeiture legislation and Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) legislation and inviting the public to complete two online surveys and attend in-person and virtual meetings to provide feedback and have an input to ensure that these new laws meet the needs of NWT residents.
