Celebrate Safely This Season – Drive Sober – Arrive Alive

The Government of the Northwest Territories is reminding residents to celebrate safely this holiday season and avoid impaired driving. The holidays are a time to relax, connect, and enjoy, and we want everyone to make it home safely after every celebration.

Why It Matters

Driving impaired by alcohol, cannabis, or other drugs puts everyone at risk, not just the driver. By choosing to drive sober, we help make sure the holidays remain safe and enjoyable for everyone.

Tips for a Safe Holiday Season

Drinking Water safety update for Kaw Tay Whee School, Dettah

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has received lead testing results for Kaw Tay Whee School in Dettah. Testing has confirmed that some water fixtures show lead levels above the maximum acceptable concentration (MAC) set out in the Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality. As a result, the Office of the Chief Public Health Officer (OCPHO) has issued a Public Health Order for the school.

Effective immediately, all water fixtures and the water fountain at Kaw Tay Whee School will be out of service.

Applications Open for Anti-Poverty and NGO Stabilization Funds

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is now accepting applications for the 2025-2026 Anti-Poverty Fund and NGO Stabilization Fund.

These programs provide financial support to community and non-governmental organizations delivering essential services across the Northwest Territories.

The Anti-Poverty Fund supports community-based projects that reduce poverty and improve social outcomes for residents.

NWT Alert Testing

On November 19, 2025 at 1:55 pm MST, the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) will issue a live test of NWT Alert, the Northwest Territories (NWT) public alerting system. Residents may see and hear the public alert test on wireless devices, cable networks and radio stations across the NWT.

NWT Alert is the NWT’s public alerting system designed to keep our residents and visitors informed during emergencies. For important information during an emergency, check with your community government and visit www.NWTalert.ca.

National Addictions Awareness Week 2025

National Addictions Awareness Week is recognized across Canada each November. It offers an opportunity for NWT residents to raise awareness about substance use and addiction, promote prevention and harm reduction, and encourage open conversations about treatment and recovery. This year’s theme, “Anchoring Hope”, highlights the value of speaking openly about substance use, which can help foster connection, support healing, and lead to positive change.
