YELLOWKNIFE (July 11, 2013) – The deadline to submit an application for a $5,000 scholarship under the Northern Aviation Scholarship program is fast approaching. All applications must be submitted by July 26, 2013 to be considered.

Those who are considering full-time training for a career related to the North’s aviation industry must apply by the deadline to be considered. Applicants who do not have confirmation of acceptance into their planned training program should still apply and submit that confirmation when it is available.

YELLOWKNIFE (July 4, 2013) – Members of Cabinet of the 17th Legislative Assembly and the Gwich’in Tribal Council Board of Directors met in Yellowknife on July 3. This was the second meeting of the Gwich’in Tribal Council and the GNWT since the signing of the intergovernmental agreement between the two governments on October 13, 2012, and followed closely on the heels of the devolution signing last week in Inuvik.

YELLOWKNIFE (July 4, 2013) –The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is proposing a limited resident harvest for the Bluenose-East and Beverly and Ahiak caribou herds in designated zones for the 2013-2014 big game hunting season.

Proposals to allow resident harvesters to purchase one tag for a bull-only harvest to be used on either the Bluenose-East or Bevely and Ahiak herds have been sent to the affected renewable resources boards for review.

For those who are going out on the water, this means ensuring that every passenger in the boat is wearing an approved lifejacket that fits properly. It also means making the choice to boat sober. The penalties for impaired boating are the same as for impaired driving.

YELLOWKNIFE (June 28, 2013) - The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) and De Beers Canada (DBC) have signed a Socio-Economic Agreement (SEA) for the proposed Gahcho Kué Project in the North Slave Region. The SEA relates to DBC’s plans to establish a mine and related facilities at Kennady Lake for the commercial production of rough diamonds.

PAULATUK (June 28, 2013) – A new approach to preparing communities for transportation-related emergencies was successfully launched in Fort McPherson on June 11-13.

A live exercise held to meet Transport Canada requirements for airport emergency exercises was preceded by training for community first responders who were taught basic emergency scene management and how to safely transport victims to the local health centre. A recently completed review of the results from these exercises confirms that the training has met organizers’ objectives.
