Wally Schumann: Moving Towards a NWT Oil and Gas Strategy

Mr. Speaker, our territory is a region of massive petroleum potential, and we have committed in our mandate to delivering a long-term strategy to capitalize on these reserves, and to bring oil and gas investment back to the NWT.

The need for this work was first identified during public engagements informing the development of the NWT Economic Opportunities Strategy.  

Wally Schumann: NWT Tourism "Secrets' Campaign

Mr. Speaker, the secret is out; or, to be more precise 150 secrets are coming out.  

They are the foundation of a Canada-wide promotion highlighting the many reasons our territory is a spectacular place to live and visit.  

From coast to coast, Canadians are learning about things like the Rabbit Kettle Tufa Mounds in Nahanni National Park, the Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk Highway, the Canol Trail, Ice Road Truckers and Fort Smith’s annual Paddlefest.

Wally Schumann: Securing International Markets for NWT Furs

The Government of the Northwest Territories made a commitment in its mandate to increase exports by promoting NWT products to international markets. I rise, today, to update my colleagues on recent activities supporting this commitment.

I am pleased to inform Members that following a long and concentrated lobby by our government and its partners, the Inuvialuit have been formally recognized under the Indigenous exception to the European Union’s seal products prohibition.

Yellowknife, le 9 mars 2017 – Les efforts soutenus du gouvernement des Territoires du Nord-Ouest (GTNO) pour percer le marché de l’Europe viennent de porter fruit. Ainsi, les fashionistas d’outre-Atlantique pourront dès l’hiver prochain se protéger élégamment des rigueurs hivernales avec des produits inuvialuits en peau de phoque.

En effet, à la demande des Territoires du Nord-Ouest (TNO), l’Union européenne (UE) a accepté d’appliquer aux produits inuvialuits l’exception, pour les Autochtones, à la prohibition des produits dérivés du phoque.

Mr. Speaker, investments in the NWT film sector are growing the strength and diversity of our economy while promoting the unique sights, sounds, and stories of our territory worldwide.

We have made the commitment to support the film industry through investments in skill development, infrastructure, marketing and communications.  We are fulfilling this commitment through the work of the NWT Film Commission and its ongoing implementation of our government’s film strategy.

Wally Schumann: Implementation of the Mineral Development Strategy

Mr. Speaker, the Government of the Northwest Territories made a commitment in its mandate to support mineral exploration and the mining sector by implementing the Mineral Development Strategy.  

I rise today to update my colleagues on our progress. Mr. Speaker, the Mineral Development Strategy has five pillars: creating a competitive edge; establishing a new regulatory environment; enhancing Aboriginal engagement and capacity; promoting sustainability; and enriching workforce development and public awareness.

Yellowknife, le 3 mars 2017 — La première Stratégie agricole des Territoires du Nord-Ouest (TNO) a été dévoilée aujourd’hui. Elle ouvre la voie aux actions, aux investissements et à la mise en place d’outils législatifs qui, en plus de faciliter la production locale d’aliments frais, sains et plus abordables, offriront aux Ténois de nouveaux débouchés économiques.
