YELLOWKNIFE (March 16, 2016) — World-class unconventional natural gas estimates in the Liard Basin were confirmed today by the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT), National Energy Board (NEB), Government of Yukon, and Government of British Columbia.

Le ministère de l’Industrie, du Tourisme et de l’Investissement (MITI) du gouvernement des Territoires du Nord-Ouest (GTNO) a financé et donné l’atelier Engaging Community Tourism Champions du 8 au 10 mars, à l’hôtel Explorer.

Yellowknife, le 10 mars 2016 – Le gouvernement des Territoires du Nord-Ouest (GTNO) a annoncé aujourd’hui d’importantes initiatives de modernisation du secteur de l’exploration et de l’exploitation minières.

Le ministère de l’Industrie, du Tourisme et de l’Investissement (MITI) amorcera un processus d’élaboration et de présentation d’un projet de loi novateur sur les ressources minières, lequel permettra de répondre aux besoins réglementaires uniques des Territoires du Nord-Ouest (TNO) tout en reflétant l’évolution des milieux industriels.

Thank you for that generous introduction. Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, I appreciate your attention this afternoon as we talk about economic leadership in the Arctic Region — a region of increasing interest and importance for the energy sector.

I would like to offer my gratitude to The Energy Council for hosting the conference this week. The programming thus far has been extraordinarily engaging and informative. I look forward to further events as the weekend continues to unfold.

YELLOWKNIFE (March 3, 2016) — A Yellowknife-based organization will spread the love of film to communities across the Northwest Territories (NWT) this March.

The Yellowknife International Film Festival (YKIFF) Road Tour — an annual event coordinated by Western Arctic Moving Pictures (WAMP) — will screen NWT and Yukon-produced films alongside select international features in each region of the NWT.

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to recognize the achievements of a transformative figure, an economic builder in our territory, a true Northern leader, Nellie Cournoyea.

Nellie served our territory and the Inuvialuit people for nearly four decades. Her career is a testament to what can be achieved with heart, resilience and clarity of vision.

Mr. Speaker, the Northwest Territories mining industry has a rich, storied history. It has provided thousands of jobs to citizens across our 33 communities, billions in revenue for investment in the well-being of our peoples, and innovations that have put the Territory on the cutting edge of responsible resource development.

Yellowknife, le 23 février 2016 – Le premier ministre Bob McLeod a nommé aujourd’hui M^me Kelly Kaylo au poste de sous-ministre intérimaire du ministère de l’Industrie, du Tourisme et de l’Investissement (MITI). M^me Kaylo remplace M. Peter Vician, qui prend sa retraite après 34 années de service au sein du gouvernement des Territoires du Nord-Ouest (GTNO). Le GTNO a entrepris un processus de recrutement de cadres en vue de trouver un remplaçant permanent à M. Vician.

I did, however, want to take the opportunity today to congratulate President Rene and your new Board; and to confirm - to all of you - our commitment, as government, to maintaining the valued relationship we have with this Chamber. 

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to update the Legislature on continuing activities in support of our territory’s most promising growth industry.

Tourism is the Northwest Territories’ single-largest renewable resource-based sector.  It has enjoyed continued growth through 2015. Thanks to investments and initiatives undertaken by the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment – and our many partners and affiliate industry organizations, we are also well-positioned today to capitalize on even more opportunities in 2016.
