Superbugs in the NWT

April 6, 2011 - Dr. David Pontin, emergency room physician at the Stanton Territorial Hospital, and  Ms. Caroline Newberry, Senior Communicable Disease Specialist, will hold a press conference to discuss the issue of superbugs in the NWT.

Superbugs cause infections and diseases, and are increasingly prevalent outside of hospital settings. A particularly aggressive superbug is found in the NWT.

New NWT Colorectal Cancer Screening Clinical Practice Guidelines

March 29, 2011 - Media are invited to learn about the new NWT Colorectal Cancer Screening Clinical Practice Guidelines in effect.

Dr. Angus MacIver, former staff surgeon and Chief of Staff at the Inuvik General Hospital, and Dr. Maureen Mayhew, acting Chief Public Health Officer for the Department of Health and Social Services, will be present to explain and answer questions about the new guidelines.

World Tuberculosis Day – March 24, 2011

March 23, 2011 - World Tuberculosis Day, March 24, increases public awareness that tuberculosis remains an epidemic in much of the world.

The rate of TB in the NWT is four to five times the national average – with about 30 per cent of NWT residents who have latent TB infections in their bodies which usually remains inactive and not a risk to the public. TB rates are highest among the Aboriginal population.

NWT Suicide Prevention Training Program in Inuvik

February 18, 2011 - The recently revised NWT Suicide Prevention Training Program is being offered to residents in the Beaufort Delta who are interested in learning suicide prevention and intervention skills to help others.

The Department of Health and Social Services, in partnership with the NWT Suicide Prevention Steering Committee, will be offering the training program at the Gwich’in Wellness Camp outside of Inuvik from March 19 to 28, 2011.
