Immunization Awareness Week: April 23-30, 2011
In the last 50 years, immunization has saved more lives in Canada than any other health intervention which is why the Government of the Northwest Territories is urging residents to ensure their immunization records, and their children’s, are kept up-to-date.
Health and Social Services Professions Legislation
April 8, 2011 - The Department of Health and Social Services is currently working on developing Health and Social Services Professions Legislation, which would provide for professional licensing for a number of health and social services professions under one Act.
Ministerial Portfolios
April 8, 2011 - Ministerial Responsibilities for the Status of Women have been assumed by Premier Floyd K. Roland effective today.
The Premier confirmed that all other Ministerial portfolios will remain unchanged – this includes the March 28, 2011 assignment of the Department of Health and Social Services and Responsibilities for Seniors, the Homeless and Persons with Disabilities to Minister J. Michael Miltenberger.
Superbugs in the NWT
April 6, 2011 - Dr. David Pontin, emergency room physician at the Stanton Territorial Hospital, and Ms. Caroline Newberry, Senior Communicable Disease Specialist, will hold a press conference to discuss the issue of superbugs in the NWT.
Superbugs cause infections and diseases, and are increasingly prevalent outside of hospital settings. A particularly aggressive superbug is found in the NWT.
New NWT Colorectal Cancer Screening Clinical Practice Guidelines
March 29, 2011 - Media are invited to learn about the new NWT Colorectal Cancer Screening Clinical Practice Guidelines in effect.
Dr. Angus MacIver, former staff surgeon and Chief of Staff at the Inuvik General Hospital, and Dr. Maureen Mayhew, acting Chief Public Health Officer for the Department of Health and Social Services, will be present to explain and answer questions about the new guidelines.
Minister of Health and Social Services Resigns
March 28, 2011 - Minister of Health and Social Services Sandy Lee tendered her resignation to the Premier on Saturday.
Premier Floyd K. Roland thanks Ms. Lee for her hard work and strong leadership as a Member the 16th Legislative Assembly’s Executive Council.
“Ms. Lee’s energy and passion will be missed,” he noted. “We wish her all the best in her future endeavours.”
World Tuberculosis Day – March 24, 2011
March 23, 2011 - World Tuberculosis Day, March 24, increases public awareness that tuberculosis remains an epidemic in much of the world.
The rate of TB in the NWT is four to five times the national average – with about 30 per cent of NWT residents who have latent TB infections in their bodies which usually remains inactive and not a risk to the public. TB rates are highest among the Aboriginal population.
National Dietitians Day

Dietitians Day is a day to celebrate this important health profession, and reminds us that for advice on proper eating, good nutrition and healthy living, we should visit our local dietitian.
