Premier Simpson issued the following statement on yesterday’s swearing-in of Northwest Territories Commissioner Gerry Kisoun in Inuvik:
I am pleased to extend my congratulations to Gerry Kisoun on being named Commissioner of the Northwest Territories (NWT).
Born on the trapline in 1953, Commissioner Kisoun brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He served as Deputy Commissioner from 2011 to 2017 and briefly as acting Commissioner upon the retirement of former Commissioner George Tuccaro.
Media is invited to receive an update on the 2024 wildfire situation in the Northwest Territories and the ongoing response to the wildfires.

“Today, my heart and thoughts are with the survivors and families of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people. Red Dress Day is not just a day of remembrance; it is a day of action and reflection on the ongoing impact of systemic injustices.
Yellowknife (April 1, 2024) – The Intergovernmental Council on Land and Resource Management (IGC) acknowledges the 10th anniversary of the Devolution Agreement and the accompanying Intergovernmental Agreement on Lands and Resources Management. This was a historic milestone that provided the Northwest Territories with greater control over lands, resources, and programs, allowing for more responsive and effective decision-making that reflects the unique needs and priorities of the territory.
Premier R.J. Simpson announced two appointments to the senior ranks of the territorial public service today.
To understand the full scope of the emergency management activities associated with the 2023 wildfire season and improve future emergency response, the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) will undergo the biggest after-action review in its history. Today the GNWT released a Request for Proposal (RFP), seeking a third-party contractor to carry out this work.
