Diane Archie: Airport Improvements

Check against delivery

Mr. Speaker, making strategic investments in our transportation system is one of the mandates of the 19th Legislative Assembly, and modernizing Northwest Territories airport infrastructure will help to achieve this. Investing in airport improvements keeps our communities connected while reducing the cost of living and supporting economic opportunities.

Given our vast Territory and dispersed communities, air travel is essential for Northern residents, businesses and tourists.

Brush burn planned at Fort Simpson Airport

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is planning a brush burn at the Fort Simpson Airport starting today, October 25, 2022.

The controlled burn is required to dispose of brush cut down on airport property that now poses a potential safety hazard. The burn will be monitored by GNWT staff and may take place over several days.

Residents of Fort Simpson should be aware the burn and smoke may be visible from some sections of Highway 1, the airport and the community.

Barge delivery cancelled to Sachs Harbour, GNWT arranging alternate fuel and freight delivery

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) advises that the barge delivery to Sachs Harbour has been cancelled for the 2022 sailing season.

A culmination of bad weather and a late start to the season – due to climate change, delayed buoy placement, and flooding in both Inuvik and Hay River – has impacted Marine Transportation Services (MTS) operations. As a result, a decision has been made that it is no longer safe to attempt crossing the Amundsen Gulf.

Milestone achieved as wind turbine arrives in Inuvik

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) and NT Energy are pleased to announce the wind turbine and other large components of the Inuvik Wind Project have arrived in Inuvik.

The arrival of the single 3.5-megawatt wind turbine is a major milestone for the project, which is a key initiative under the 2030 Energy Strategy and will reduce diesel consumption in the NWT’s largest diesel-powered community by 30 percent – offsetting diesel consumption in Inuvik by three million litres annually. Construction of the project began in January of 2022.
