Mr. Speaker, winter roads play a role in connecting families and businesses in the territory. Every year, they allow essential goods like fuel for electricity generation, heat, and transportation to be delivered to communities and homes.
The Government of the Northwest Territories recognizes the importance of these community lifelines, and remains committed to building, operating and maintaining accessible winter roads for all residents of the Northwest Territories.
Shortly after noon on May 16, 2023, the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) experienced a network failure that impacted most Technology Service Centre (TSC) and department services, including communications (phones, email, network) and critical servers that rely on network connectivity. This included healthcare systems, websites, financial, human resources systems and 9-1-1.
The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is seeking input from Sahtu residents in Norman Wells and Fort Good Hope on the Oscar Creek Bridge relocation. Meetings will be hosted in each community and are an opportunity for the GNWT to provide an update on the project, discuss the preliminary bridge design, and receive feedback.

The Government of the Northwest Territories would like to advise residents that the winter road season is coming to an end. Drivers should check the highway conditions map before embarking on their journey.
As temperatures increase and ice begins to melt, road conditions can quickly become unsafe for travel. While every effort will be made to provide advance notice, roads may need to close quickly.

Mr. Speaker, the Government of the Northwest Territories is committed to strengthening connections with air transportation businesses and industries. Collaboration with world- wide aviation leaders is vital to the Yellowknife Airport’s success, and to the growth of our territory through its tourism and employment sectors.
The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is inviting residents to provide feedback on two highway infrastructure projects: the replacement of the Jean Marie River bridge and the removal of existing culverts and new bridge construction at Redknife River.
The Jean Marie River Bridge – located on highway 1 approximately 65 km south of Fort Simpson – requires replacement as it is reaching the end of its life cycle.
The month of March is a busy time for travel in the territory with increased traffic on our highways and winter roads. The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) reminds residents and commercial drivers to drive safely, keep a close eye on weather conditions and be prepared for unexpected challenges.
The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is proposing amendments to the Hours-of-Service regulations for electronic logging devices (ELDs) under the Motor Vehicles Act to support road safety in the Northwest Territories (NWT).
ELDs automatically record driving time in commercial vehicles. The device replaces the paper log system and makes it easier to track, manage, share and improve the accuracy of a driver’s Hours-of-Service record.
The attached is being distributed on behalf of the Government of Canada, the Tłı̨chǫ Government and the Government of the Northwest Territories.
