2011 Canada Winter Games

February 7, 2011 - Today, during Session, the Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs, Robert C. McLeod, extended his best wishes to Team NWT as they head off to the Canada Winter Games.

Mr. Speaker, it is my pleasure to extend best wishes to Team NWT's 120 athletes, coaches and mission staff who will be participating in the 2011 Canada Winter Games being held in Halifax, Nova Scotia from February 11 - 27.

New Traditional Games Tour

January 28, 2011 - This winter, elementary school students from across the Northwest Territories will have the opportunity to try traditional games such as the one-foot high kick and the stick pull.

“We are introducing these games to children at a younger age,” said the Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA), Robert C. McLeod. “We hope to create a passion for the cultural and physically active aspects of the games that will remain with them for life.”

Call for 2011 Outstanding Volunteer Award Nominations

January 12, 2011 - The Government of the Northwest Territories wants to recognize the Territory’s most outstanding volunteers.

Every year, through its Department of Municipal and Community Affairs, the GNWT pays tribute to individuals and organizations who have improved the quality of life for NWT residents through significant voluntary commitment by presenting them with Outstanding Volunteer Awards.

Get Active NWT Grants Awarded

December 21, 2010 - Thanks to the 87 Get Active NWT grants, over 250 new and exciting physical activity events will be happening this winter.

The Department of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA) and the NWT Recreation and Parks Association (NWTRPA) recently awarded 42 more Get Active NWT grants to community groups across the NWT, on top of the 45 grants distributed in November.

High Performance Athlete Grant Recipients Announced

December 1, 2010 - The recipients of the 2010-2011 High Performance Athlete Grant were announced today by the Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs, Robert C. McLeod, and the president of the Sport North Federation, Richard Daitch.

“It is great to see so many northern athletes doing so well on the national and international scene,” said Minister McLeod. “We are proud of them all and hope that this grant will assist them in achieving their goals and aspirations and allow them to represent the NWT with pride.”

Third NWT Governance Conference

November 30, 2010 - The Department of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA) is hosting the third NWT Governance Conference from December 7 – 9, 2010 in Yellowknife.

MACA invites one Council member and your Senior Administration staff to participate in the conference. Travel subsidy is available for 2 participants from your community.

Traditional Games & Sport Coaching

November 5, 2010 - The Department of Municipal and Community Affairs is offering the next course, Traditional Games and Sport Coaching, in the Recreation Leadership program,  November 15 - 20, 2010 in Inuvik.

The Traditional Games and Sport Coaching course introduces the student to all aspects of traditional Dene and Inuit games and the coaching skills needed to instruct athletes participating in the games. Community Coaching certification will also be provided through the course.
