The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has received drinking water testing results for Paul William Kaeser (PWK) High School and Joseph Burr Tyrrell School (JBT) in Fort Smith. Testing has confirmed that some water fixtures show lead levels above the maximum acceptable concentration (MAC) set out in the Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality. As a result, the Office of the Chief Public Health Officer (OCPHO) has issued a Public Health Order for the school.

The department of Environment and Climate Change (ECC) has confirmed one case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), otherwise known as bird flu, in a raven in the Northwest Territories (NWT), with one additional suspected case.
Testing identified the H5N1 strain, which is highly infectious among birds. There is no sign of an outbreak, and risk to other birds remains low. While the transmission of bird flu to humans is rare and relatively mild in nature, the NWT Chief Public Health Officer, Dr. Kami Kandola, advises residents to remain cautious.

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has completed interim reporting on enhanced water quality monitoring on the Slave River at Fort Smith that began on March 2, 2023 after the GNWT was informed of two spill incidents near the Kearl Oil Sands Mine in northern Alberta.
Enhanced monitoring was done in collaboration with the Fort Smith Métis Council, the Town of Fort Smith, and Smith’s Landing First Nation.

Due to current weather conditions the Town of Fort Smith has implemented a fire ban on open air fires within municipal boundaries. Effective immediately and until further notice, a fire ban is now also in place for the Queen Elizabeth Territorial Park.
Camp stoves, enclosed BBQs and propane-fueled cooking and heating devices are permitted for use in NWT Parks. They must be placed within regulation fire pits and should not emit a flame more than 0.5 metres in diameter and 0.5 metres in height.
